Howard Community College Rises in National Rankings, Named Best in Maryland in 2026

Howard Community College (HCC) has been recognized as one of the nation’s top community colleges in two leading 2025–2026 rankings, named the #1 Community College in Maryland and the #1 Community College in the Baltimore Area by Niche, and ranked #32 nationally by WalletHub in its annual Best & Worst Community Colleges study.
In WalletHub’s 2025 analysis of more than 650 community colleges across 18 cost and quality metrics, HCC ranked in the top 5% nationally and 54th nationally in career outcomes, a measure that weighs post-graduation employment, median earnings, and the share of former students who out-earn the average high school graduate.
Maryland as a whole was named the best community college system in the United States in WalletHub’s companion state-level analysis, with five Maryland institutions placing within the top 40 community colleges nationally.
Niche’s 2026 rankings, released this fall, placed HCC at the top of every Maryland-based community college category, including #1 Best Community Colleges in Maryland (of 16) and #1 Best Community Colleges in the Baltimore Area (of 5). Nationally, the college ranked #64 out of 673 community colleges and #58 among the country’s Best AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions) Schools.
HCC carries an overall Niche grade of B+, supported by more than 800 student reviews averaging four out of five stars.
“These rankings affirm what our students, employees, and community already know; Howard Community College is delivering a world-class education that changes lives,” said Daria J. Willis, president of Howard Community College. “To be recognized at the top of Maryland’s community college landscape by Niche while also placing in the top five percent nationally by WalletHub speaks to the depth of what’s happening on our campus every day. Together, we are removing barriers, opening pathways, and helping our students build careers and futures that transform their families and communities.”
The recognitions reflect a clear upward trajectory for the college. In Niche’s 2023 rankings, HCC placed #92 among all U.S. two-year institutions and was already the top community college in the Baltimore metropolitan area. In the 2026 cycle, HCC has moved up 28 spots to #64 nationally while expanding its regional standing to claim the #1 position in both Maryland and the Baltimore Metropolitan outright.
“Maryland’s community colleges are setting a national standard, and HCC is proud to contribute to that legacy,” Willis added. “Our continued recognition by Niche and WalletHub, our recent selection by the Aspen Institute as one of the nation’s top 200 community colleges eligible for the 2027 Aspen Prize, our membership in the Achieving the Dream Network, and our national FamilyU Seal for student-parent support all showcase that when a college commits to meeting students where they dream, the outcomes follow.”
Niche compiles its annual rankings using data from the U.S. Department of Education, along with qualitative input from current students and alumni, and evaluates institutions on academic quality, affordability, campus diversity, student life, and career outcomes. WalletHub draws its rankings from the National Center for Education Statistics, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Council for Community & Economic Research, weighting cost and financing, education outcomes, and career outcomes.
