The Medical Assistant program at Howard Community College prepares students with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits to pursue an entry-level position in the ambulatory medical field. The 4-month hybrid program is designed to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. This program concentrates on helping you acquire knowledge and develop skills in performing laboratory, clinical, and medical office procedures in a physician's office or ambulatory care clinic.
This course includes an online component as well as mandatory skills/lab sessions, and an extensive practical internship. Digital badge eligible (DB).
Course requirements:
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Complete medical forms
- CPR certification required
- Proof of medical insurance
- Pass basic reading assessment with a score of 240 or above.
- Ability to speak, read, and understand Standard American English.
- Pass a criminal background check
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination

The Medical Assistant program is comprised of three courses designed to prepare you with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits to pursue an entry-level position in the ambulatory medical field. This program concentrates on helping you acquire knowledge and develop skills in per forming laboratory, clinical, and medical office procedures in a physician’s office or ambulatory care clinic. This course provides students the opportunity to take the National Certification exam, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). CCMA is offered through the National Healthcare Association (NHA). The CCMA certifies that someone has the skills to perform both clinical and some administrative tasks on a healthcare setting. This course includes an online component as well as mandatory skills/ lab sessions, and an extensive practical internship. Requirements: Students must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma/GED, must pass a criminal background check, have a current BLS CPR certificate, have proof of medical insurance, and complete health forms required for patient contact. (Students without a prior degree or those who have not taken English 121 are required to take the Accuplacer Assessment at the college testing center and score a minimum of 240). Students must also successfully complete XH-121, XH-122 and XH123 to receive a certificate. No refund seven days prior to the start date. Book is included in the tuition. 22 CEUs. Digital badge eligible (DB).
