Become a Diagnostic Medical Vascular Sonographer

The need for trained diagnostic professionals is growing at a fast rate. Working sonographers already registered in cardiac and general who are interested in becoming more competitive in the workforce can now prepare for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® (ARDMS®) Vascular Registry Board exam at HCC.

Diagnostic Medical Vascular Sonography Training at HCC

This program is offered in partnership with HCC’s Division of Health Sciences and takes about four months to complete.

Sonographers (who are currently already registered) that successfully complete this program will be eligible to sit for the ARDMS Vascular Registry Board exam.

Vascular Ultrasound I
The Vascular Ultrasound I course objectives align with the National Education Curriculum for Sonography (NEC) provided by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of fluid dynamics when interpreting cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous and arterial ultrasound images.
- Describe the hemodynamic changes that occur in the cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous and arterial systems.
- Identify the risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous and arterial diseases.
- Utilize noninvasive vascular testing to assess the peripheral venous and arterial system.
- Perform and accurately identify diagnostic findings for cerebrovascular, peripheral venous, abdominal vascular, and peripheral arterial ultrasound examinations.
- Correlate cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous and arterial ultrasound findings with results from other imaging modalities.
- Describe current treatment options for cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous and arterial diseases.

Vascular Ultrasound II
The Vascular Ultrasound II course objectives align with the National Education Curriculum for Sonography (NEC) provided by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of fluid dynamics when interpreting peripheral arterial and abdominal vascular ultrasound images.
- Describe the hemodynamic changes that occur in the peripheral arterial and abdominal vascular systems.
- Identify the risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with peripheral arterial and abdominal vascular diseases.
- Utilize noninvasive vascular testing to assess the peripheral arterial system.
- Perform and accurately identify diagnostic findings for abdominal vascular and peripheral arterial ultrasound examinations.
- Correlate peripheral arterial and abdominal vascular ultrasound findings with results from other imaging modalities.
- Describe current treatment options for peripheral arterial and abdominal vascular diseases.
- Describe the test procedures and modalities used for evaluation of miscellaneous vascular and vascular related diseases such as impotence, thoracic outlet, temporal arteritis, lymphedema and other conditions.

ARDMS SPI Registry Review
This course aligns with the National Education Curriculum for Sonography (NEC) provided by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).

Course Objectives

To prepare for their ARDMS SPI exam by reviewing:
- Physics Principles
- Ultrasound Transducers
- Pulse-echo Instrumentation
- Hemodynamics
- Doppler Principles
- Quality Assurance
- Patient Care

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the healthcare certificate program the following criteria must be met:
- You must currently be registered with ARDMS, CCI, or ARRT.
  For example, you are eligible to apply if you are already a current Registered Cardiac Sonography seeking to obtain your RVT or current RDMS seeking to obtain your RVT.
