Dental assistants are an integral part of the team that ease patients’ anxieties while assisting the dentist with examinations and treatments. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dental assistants is projected to grow six percent through 2034, which is faster than many other professions.
Dental Assisting & Radiology Training at HCC
In 10 weeks, students can be ready for a new career in Dental Assistant & Radiology. Students will have entry-level dental assisting job skills upon successful completion of this single, noncredit course.
This hybrid course is a combination of face-to-face lab practice and online theory coursework. Topics of this course include dental terminology and anatomy, concepts of four-handed dentistry, instrumentation, causes and treatment of common dental diseases. Students will receive 24 hours of dental radiology instruction as required by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) for eligibility to sit for the DANB Radiology Health and Safety (RHS) certification exam. Upon successful completion of the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam, students will earn the DANB RHS certification.
All mandatory in-person instruction and skills lab practice will take place, one evening per week, on Howard Community College's main campus. Completion of health forms is required for this course. Digital badge eligible (DB).

Introduction to Dental Assisting and Radiology
This noncredit hybrid course will teach students entry level dental assisting job skills when you successfully complete this noncredit course, approved by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. This course is a combination of face-to-face lab practice and online internet instruction, in addition to an eight-hour participation in a dental office shadowing experience. Topics include dental terminology and anatomy, concepts of four-handed dentistry, instrumentation, and treatment of common dental diseases. This course includes 24 hours of dental radiology instruction as required by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) for eligibility to sit for the DANB Radiology Health and Safety (RHS) certification exam. Prerequisites: Must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma/GED and provide proof of medical insurance. (Students without a prior degree or those who have not taken English 121 are required to take the Accuplacer Assessment at the college testing center and score a minimum of 240). Computer and internet access required. You must success- fully complete all course requirements to receive a certificate. No refund given seven days prior to start date.
