Adaptive Music Lessons
Unlocking the Joy of Music for Every Ability
Offered through The Music Institute at Howard Community College, Adaptive Music Lessons provide personalized instruction for learners of all ages and abilities, combining music education with specialized support. Led by board-certified music therapist and teacher Dr. Alicia Barksdale, each lesson is tailored to the student's unique cognitive, physical, emotional, and social needs, beginning with an assessment during the first session. Students explore voice, piano, guitar, drums, and other instruments while building confidence, strengthening communication skills, and supporting their overall well-being.
Lesson Details
- Adaptive Music Lessons will be offered on Mondays in the Horowitz Visual & Performing Arts Center (HVPA).
- 30-minute private lessons are recommended for ages 12 and under.
- 45-minute private lessons are recommended for ages 12 and older.

- Refund Policy: A refund may be issued up to seven days after the start date. The registration fee is non-refundable.
Meet the Instructor
Dr. Alicia Barksdale is a board-certified music therapist and educator specializing in adaptive music instruction and inclusive learning. As the instructor for Adaptive Music Lessons at The Music Institute, she brings extensive experience in music therapy, higher education, and research focused on accessibility for learners of all abilities.
