Letter from the Board Chair

Greetings,

On behalf of the Howard Community College Board of Trustees, it is my great honor to share reflections on the 2024-25 academic year. HCC continues to demonstrate its value as a hub for teaching and learning, an economic engine as one of the county’s largest employers, and an example of taxpayers’ investment in community growth and prosperity.
When the state outlined its plans for Maryland to emerge as a domestic capital for cybersecurity, Howard Community College emerged as a model institution for significant workforce development in this critical area.
When federal workers were sadly and suddenly displaced, our campus hosted several job fairs to connect dozens of employers with talented individuals seeking relief through work, or embracing the chance to pivot to new career interests and fields.
When students needed additional support, our partners in fundraising led efforts to raise more than $5.3 million to support scholarship provision, to combat food insecurity, and to support workforce training and research.
We continue to be an example of Howard County’s best and prevailing values, sponsoring many of the county’s signature cultural festivals and seeing our students and faculty emerge as award-winning innovators and global collaborators.
The Board continues to hold full confidence and support in President Daria Willis and her senior leadership team, and congratulates our faculty, staff, and community partners for their tireless dedication. Together, we are shaping a future where every student has the tools, vision, and encouragement to thrive.
With pride and optimism,
Vivian Moore Lawyer
