Howard Community College (HCC) President Daria J. Willis today announced students Carlton Allen, Lorna Ngethe, and Oluwaseye Ayoade as semifinalists for the prestigious and highly competitive Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.
The finalists, who will be announced in May, could receive up to $55,000 per year for two to three years to complete a bachelor’s degree at any accredited four-year U.S. undergraduate institution. Allen and Ngethe are members of the HCC Silas Craft Collegians Program, a learning community dedicated to unique academic, career and personal development and success.
These scholarships are awarded to community college students “who have demonstrated exceptional academic ability, leadership, service, and a determination to complete their bachelor’s degrees at top four-year institutions.” This year, 485 semifinalists were selected from 1,300 applicants, attending 224 community colleges across 37 states.
In addition to financial assistance, the selected Cooke Transfer Scholars will have various educational opportunities, including academic advising, internships, study abroad and graduate school funding. Scholarship recipients can use the funds to cover tuition, books, fees and living expenses. They will also have access to a network of over 3,800 fellow Cooke scholars and alumni.
