Health Care Interpreter Training
The Health Care Interpreting Program is comprised of three courses that need to be taken sequentially to earn a certificate of training. You must have a high level of proficiency in English and at least one other language to be able to participate in this class. Summer registration opens in April 2026.
In the first course, Orientation to Health Care Interpreting Training, you will get an overview of the program components and requirements. The Health Care Interpreter’s standard of practice, roles and functions will also be introduced. You must pass language assessments that aim to gauge your level of proficiency to be invited to take the second course in the series. In the second course, Interpreting in Health Care, students will develop the awareness, knowledge, and skills necessary for effective language interpretation in health care settings. Students will learn basic information about common medical conditions, their treatments, and medical procedures. Students will also learn to bridge linguistic and cultural competency between patients and providers. In the third course, Field Experience in Health Care Interpreting, students will find their own volunteer opportunities to practice their interpreting skills. They will reflect, analyze, and self-evaluate their performance. Digital badge eligible (DB).
