
Study Abroad/International Scholarships
IIE American Passport Project
The Office of International Education is accepting applications the IIE American Passport Project. This initiative provides full passport processing costs for 25 eligible HCC students. The application portal is open until November 30th, 2025. While students must apply for a passport in that window of time, students are welcome to study abroad at any time during their time at HCC.
Eligible students include:
- Aged 18 or older
- U.S. Citizen
- Pell-eligible
- Enrolled at HCC
- A First Year Student
- Never had an adult passport
Please allow for ample time to complete the application. In addition to demographic questions, there are three short-answer questions:
- How will having a passport impact your future?
- Share about a time when you stepped out of your comfort zone?
- What does being a global citizen mean to you?

HCC Study Abroad Scholarship
HCC is committed to helping students participate in travel study abroad by offering scholarships. Please make note the scholarship application is part of the general study abroad program application. Both are due by the annual travel study abroad program application deadline. Dates for external scholarships may differ.
International Education Study Abroad Scholarship
Qualified candidates for this scholarship must be enrolled in a program for academic credit, register for the credit course associated with the program, be over the age of 18 by the start of the program, and be in good academic and disciplinary standing at HCC.
HCC Scholar Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship is for Rouse, STEM, and Schoenbrodt Scholars. Qualified candidates must be enrolled in courses at HCC, register for the credits associated with the program, be over the age of 18 by the start of the program, and be in good academic and disciplinary standing at HCC.
Silas Craft Program Scholarship
This scholarship is for Silas Craft Collegians. Qualified candidates must be enrolled in courses at HCC, register for the credits associated with the program, be over the age of 18 by the start of the program, and be in good academic and disciplinary standing at HCC.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
- Must be enrolled in at least one academic credit course at HCC.
- Must be making satisfactory academic progress.
- Must be in good disciplinary standing.
- Must take study abroad for credit and register for the 4-5 credits associated with the study abroad program.
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or international equivalent.
Scholarships from Other Sources
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
This is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study (minimum of four weeks in country) and student need. Qualified candidates must be US citizens, in good academic and disciplinary standing at HCC, be over the age of 18 years old, and be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of study abroad.
Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, eligible for credit at the student’s home institution, and study in-country for at least 4 weeks (28 days).
Boren Scholarship (Summer)
Boren Scholarships promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion. Summer programs must be eight weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and studying in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, be in good academic and disciplinary standing at HCC, and be over the age of 18 years old.
Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to increase the number of students studying and mastering critical foreign languages. This program allows students to receive intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences to create cultural understanding and rapid language gains. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 14 languages. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen enrolled as a degree seeking student at HCC. Students must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing at HCC and be over the age of 18 years old.
