Physical Sciences
The Physical Sciences Department at Howard Community College offers a diverse and dynamic array of courses in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Oceanography, and Earth Science. Our department is committed to fostering intellectual curiosity, scientific exploration, and a deep understanding of the physical world around us. The Physical Sciences department is dedicated to fostering a community of scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Join us on a journey of discovery as we unravel the mysteries of the physical world and work to a better understanding of our planet. Here is an overview of what you can expect when you become a part of our vibrant academic community:
Chemistry: Our chemistry courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the molecular world. From understanding the fundamental principles of matter and energy to delving into the intricacies of chemical reactions, our students gain a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory experiences. In our labs students are engaged as they use cutting edge equipment to carry out experiments and facilitate learning.
Physics: Our physics courses offer a rigorous curriculum that explores the fundamental laws that govern our universe. Whether you’re interested in classical mechanics or quantum physics, our faculty members will guide you on a journey of discovery. Hands-on experiments and inquiry-based labs are abundant, allowing you to apply theoretical concepts to real world problems.
Oceanography: Our oceanography lecture and lab is perfectly suited for studying the geological, chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the ocean. From plate tectonics to El Niño to climate change, you will be challenged to look at our planet from a new perspective.
Earth Science: Our earth science course focuses on the study of our planets dynamic processes and includes general examinations of geology, meteorology, and astronomy. You’ll gain insight into the Earth’s past, present, and future and view current crises (like climate change) with an informed and critical perspective.
