Alternative Breaks
Alternative Break experiences give students the opportunity to travel to a new location with a group of fellow students and two staff/faculty advisors in order to explore critical social issues through meaningful service, education, and reflection. Each trip features a different social issue area of focus, community partner, and domestic or international location.
On past trips, students have built houses with Habitat for Humanity, fed individuals experiencing hunger, participated in environmental clean-ups, built oyster reefs, and helped operate mobile shower units that served unhoused populations.
Applications for Alternative Winter Break trips are typically available and due in October. Applications for Alternative Spring Break trips are typically available in late January and due mid-February.
Each break trip has a limited number of spots for student participants. Applications are reviewed by a committee and then a select group of applicants are invited to participate in a short, 15-minute interview with the committee.
Please note: All trips are substance-free and cost a nominal fee. Students must be enrolled in a class at HCC and be 18 years of age by the time of travel in order to apply.

CO-OP
Interested in Cooperative Education?
Pursuing an internship for academic credit is an opportunity some HCC students choose to pursue, especially as part of internship programs that require students to be enrolled in an academic institution. Co-op classes allow HCC students to be eligible to apply to these internships.
To participate in Cooperative Education at HCC, you must have completed 12 college credits and have a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Prior approval is required to register for a Co-op class, and students must secure an internship before they will be approved to register. Interested students should email ccce@howardcc.edu several weeks in advance of the start of the semester to ensure that they have time to gain the required approval. Students should also reach out to a faculty member in their academic program who may be able to serve as a faculty advisor.
Eligible students can enroll in a Co-op class for 1-4 credits, depending on how much time they will spend working onsite in their internship. They will develop and track learning objectives with a faculty advisor and submit regular reports and reflections about their work site and how they are connecting their experience to their academic goals.
