Ivonne

Ivonne overcame the transition to a new country and the challenges of single motherhood to pursue journalism, following in her parents’ impressive footsteps.
The daughter of two top El Salvadorian news broadcasters, Ivonne always knew she wanted to be a journalist. In pursuit of this dream, Ivonne overcame the transition to a new country and the challenges of single motherhood to graduate HCC in 2016 with a Communications Studies degree. She plans to continue her studies in journalism at a four-year university.
Ivonne’s journey was not without its struggles. Leaving their livelihoods and relatives behind upon immigrating to the U.S., her parents had to start over, both working a number of odd jobs to support their family. But with hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit, they began making commercials on an old discarded computer they found, and within ten years built a successful marketing company. Ivonne spent her teens working in her family’s new business, and decided to go to HCC and follow her parents into broadcast journalism.
Ivonne also applied her parents’ tenacity and passion to her role as a single mother, saying, “A little less than a year ago, I gave birth to my biggest blessing, a beautiful baby boy, but I also gave birth to a dream, a path to success needed for me to become the best I could be for my son and family. I was scared that I wasn’t going to finish school… it was hard to find time to raise my baby boy, work, and study, but with the help of God and my family I did it!”
