Steven H Silberg is the coordinator of Foundation level classes in Visual Arts and teaches 2-D design, Foundations of Visual Art, and digital media courses. As a practicing artist, his pedagogy supports his approach to art – exploring the core fundamental elements and skills of any chosen technique. As an educator, he strikes a balance between teacher, coach, mentor, and community builder, developing both skill mastery and one-on-one connections with his students.
Silberg is an image-influenced, material-based, process-oriented, cross-media artist with a background ranging from photography to book conservation. Working in image, video, and interactive installation, he engages each medium as a literalist. For him, the structure and process leading to the image is as important as the composition and content. By highlighting the construction of the image, Silberg allows his viewers to both engage the work aesthetically and engage with the technology creating it.
Silberg brings this same process-oriented exploration to his curatorial projects through crowdsourcing and collaboration. Creating exhibitions and projects based in instruction and actions, he develops a framework for interaction between individuals, between individual and institution, and between individual and materials.
