Tips for a Successful Semester
You’ve registered for classes, picked up your textbooks, and have your student ID and parking pass in hand. You’re ready for the semester — but how do you keep that momentum going and set yourself up for success? Here are some essential tips and resources designed specifically to help you thrive at HCC this semester!
Build your support network
Students will tell you that the support they receive from faculty and staff is one of the best things about attending HCC. Whether you’re looking for mentoring, counseling, group activities, or one-on-one academic support, you’ll find programs to help with college coursework, career planning, and life skills. Whether you’re a single parent, first-generation college student, or someone who needs additional support — we are here for you! Start by visiting RCF-302.
Get involved with Student Life
Much of your college education will take place outside the classroom. At Student Life, you’ll find a wide range of opportunities to learn, grow, explore, get involved, and create new friendships. Find and register for activities through HCC’s student portal app, Campus Groups — and don’t forget to download it to discover even more resources.
Unlock your potential at the Academic Center for Excellence
Need a little help with a tough subject, or want to sharpen your study skills? The Academic Center for Excellence (RCF-340) offers free tutoring, workshops, and math reviews — both in person and online. From polishing your writing skills to preparing for your next exam, you’ll find friendly support to help you succeed.
Find your perfect study spot
The HCC Library is so much more than books. You’ll find group study rooms, quiet zones, comfy seating, and plenty of space to focus. Computer labs across campus also provide quiet places to work. Student parents can check out the Family Study Room, a safe space to study while keeping their little ones entertained.
Be well and successful
HCC offers resources to help you with basic needs and daily essentials, including access to food assistance, housing, and health care. The Fueling Dragons program offers an on-campus food pantry, nutrition tips, and cooking tutorials, while the Wellness Center provides services for stress relief, healthy living, and personal well-being.
Stay “in the know”
Sign up for HCC’s mobile alerts for quick updates on important campus news, emergencies and closings. Follow the college on Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube — and share your own campus moments with #HowardCC.
Plan ahead — get advised for next semester!
Not sure which classes you need for your degree or transfer plan? Interested in learning more about accelerated (7-week) courses and Zero Textbook Cost courses? Advisors can help you select courses, understand requirements, and establish a clear path to achieving your goals. Meet with an advisor early so you’re ready for next semester.
Most importantly, at HCC, we are “Meeting students where they dream,” and we are here to support every step of your academic journey.
