Event Details | Leadership in the Battlefield, The Underground Railroad
Experience the power of leadership on the pathway to freedom, where history comes alive on February 27, 2026!
Join Student Life and the Center for Institutional Transformation
for a trip to Maryland’s Eastern Shore to learn more about the Underground Railroad and the leadership lessons that can be learned from Harriet Tubman and other key figures.
Join internationally recognized historian Linda Harris, Down Set Lead facilitator Rod Bourn, and Dr. Bergina Isbell as they guide you chronologically through the Underground Railroad on a modern coach bus.
Stopping at key sites (Cambridge, Buckstown Village Store, etc.) you'll learn about how the UGRR operated, the decisions that Harriet Tubman and other conductors made, and why. The group then delves into how those decisions can serve as lessons that can be applied in making better decisions for yourself tomorrow.
Included at a few stops, we will be treated to spirituals by Ms. Harris and musician David Cole, who will share the songs' double meanings that served as coded messages for escape.
This tour is a blend of history and learning how to lead with courage, vision, and values, while drawing strength from stories of people who made impossible choices with profound humanity.
Transportation and lunch is included in your free ticket. We will leave from HCC at 7:30 am and will return by 6 pm.
