ARTsites

Now in its fifteenth year, the Howard County Arts Council's ARTsites program creates new visual landmarks and engages the community by sponsoring 12-month installations of public art across the county with a mission to make the arts accessible to all. Howard Community College has participated in ARTsites since the first year of the program. 

Howard Community College’s ARTsites 2025 piece, “Yellow Brick Road” was created by artist Richard Pitts, whose body of work includes a series of sculptures and paintings that are ever-creating a moving dialogue with the environment. Richard believes that “sculpture can make a place important and in return that place makes the sculpture important.“ Of Yellow Brick Road, Pitts shared that “the form seems to sculpt the air and signifies concepts of growth.” The sculpture, formed from aluminum, is located on the West patio of the Kahlert Foundation Complex, bringing a pop of color to the landscape as guests enter college grounds from Hickory Ridge Road. “Yellow Brick Road” will be on campus through the summer of 2027, joining four previous ARTsites pieces now permanently installed, including “The Cycle,” “Autumn Amber,” “Basalt Man,” and "BLM."
