HCC Login ID and Password
Use your HCC Login ID and password to access myHCC, HCC email, campus computers, Password Services, and the HCC wireless network. HCC’s online Password Services tool, available at www.howardcc.edu/PasswordServices, allows students to initially set up and manage their HCC login credentials, and re-set forgotten passwords.
Your HCC Login ID consists of the first initial of your first name + the first 7 digits of your last name + the last 4 digits of your student ID number. Here are two examples:

Student ID#: 0123456
HCC Login ID = njones3456
Password Services will walk you through the initial set up of your identity and password, and with changing your password every 6 months thereafter or assisting you if you forget your password.
myHCC is the center of your digital life at Howard Community College! Use it as the starting point for many online services. After logging into myHCC with your HCC Login ID and password, you can view college calendars and announcements, check email, use Password Services, and access services to:
- Register for, add/drop from classes.
- Pay your bill.
- Order a transcript.
- View class schedules, grades, advising assignments, financial aid and scholarship status, and academic course history.
The College recognizes email as an official method for communication with students. Students are expected to act upon all official communications received at their college email address. Access email within myHCC, or directly from https://owa.howardcc.edu using your HCC Login ID and password. Check your email regularly, delete messages that you no longer need, and empty the Deleted Items folder to ensure you will be able to continue sending and receiving college email.
Your HCC student email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. For example, student Jackson Udall’s email address would be email@example.com.
Your instructor’s email address is their firstname.lastname@example.org. For example, Professor Jane Goodwin’s email address would be email@example.com.
Some students and faculty with duplicate names may have numbers in their email addresses. For example, Professor Mary Smith may have an email address of firstname.lastname@example.org. You can always contact the Technology Help Desk if you are unsure. See contact information below.
Canvas is the primary course delivery system used by HCC for online classes. Most classroom instructors also use Canvas for supplemental materials, quizzes, and class activities. If you are registered for an online course, you can access Canvas when the semester starts either through myHCC or by logging in directly using the Canvas link on www.howardcc.edu. Use the Google Chrome browser to ensure full functionality of Canvas. For more information, visit the eLearning website at www.howardcc.edu/academics/elearning.
Wireless Internet Access
HCC’s free wireless Internet is available to HCC registered credit and ESL students in most non-classroom areas on campus and some classrooms, including the Café on the Quad, the Duncan Hall lounges, the Hickory Ridge building, the Athletics Center and the Health Sciences building. Using your personal laptop or other device, open a browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) and log in to the student wireless network, HCCSTUDENT, using your HCC Login ID and password.
HCC Mobile Alert
The Mobile Alert system enables you to receive instant notification of important campus information and emergency announcements to your cell phone, email, pager, or desktop RSS application. It will alert you to parking problems, weather delays and closures, and on-campus emergencies and drills. Subscribing to the service is optional and free; however, standard text messaging charges from your carrier may apply. Visit www.howardcc.edu/mobilealert to learn more and sign up.
HCC provides two open computer study labs, which offer a quiet academic environment where students can study, do research and complete class assignments. These labs are located in CL-129 and DH-110, and are equipped with PCs and Macs offering Internet access, scanners, printers, CD/DVD writers, and software based upon the needs of the academic community. Credit students may log in using their HCC Login ID and password. Computer lab and help desk staff are stationed within these labs to assist users with logging in, software and questions.
Students should bring their personal headsets for audio. On occasion, students may be asked to relocate to another computer to allow someone to access specialized software, scanners, or raised computer desks. Food and beverages are not permitted. To maintain our quiet study area, we ask that students minimize conversations and noise, turn off cell phones or set to vibrate mode, and leave the room to make or receive phone calls.
Students are encouraged to save and back up their work frequently. Computers in the open labs automatically log off and erase files after ten minutes of inactivity.
Lab users are expected to adhere to HCC’s Standards of Acceptable Use of Campus Technology, condensed below.
Both labs are usually closed for college holidays and breaks. See Office and Service Hours section in the Student Handbook, check the posted hours in the Computer Labs, click for our online schedule or contact the Technology Help Desk.
Students are allocated up to 500 black ink pages (250 sheets) per semester at no charge. The free printing allocation is shared across campus computers available in the Library, Learning Assistance Center, and Health Sciences open lab. Purchase Debitek cards in the labs and Library for color printing, or to print once the free allocation has been used.
Students are encouraged to use flash (USB) drives for storing personal digital files. Refer to http://studentweb.howardcc.edu for information on network file storage available for students (1 gigabyte), or stop by the computer labs for assistance in setting up a StudentWeb folder. This free service enables students to access these files from any computer, on or off campus, with Internet access.
Open Access Computers
In addition to the computer study labs, students can log in and use computers in the Verizon Cyber Café located inside the Café on the Quad. Open computers are also located on the first floor of Duncan Hall lounge, outside of the Student Life office (SA201), and in the Athletic and Fitness Center. Printing is not available from these areas.
The Help Desk offers laptops for full time credit students to use for periods from 4 hours to 24 hours. To check out a laptop, see staff in the computer lab (CL-129), Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during fall and spring semesters.
Technology Help Desk
Help Desk staff are available to assist students having problems with passwords, email, myHCC, online course access, wireless access, registration, printing, software and other technology. Drop by the Help Desk located inside the computer labs in Room DH-110 or CL-129, call 443-518-4444, email email@example.com, or visit www.howardcc.edu/helpdesk for information, online forms and FAQs.
For your cyber safety:
- Do not disclose your student ID number and Login ID except when conducting college business with authorized staff.
- Always log off or shut down/restart your computer when you are finished working on any public computer, including campus computers.
HCC’s Acceptable Use of Campus Technology Policy (condensed)
The purpose of technology resources at Howard Community College (HCC) is to support instruction, business, and research for faculty, staff, and students of HCC. The college reserves the right to extend, limit, restrict, or deny privileges and access to these resources.
EXPECTATIONS HCC expects members of the college community to adhere to local, state, and federal laws on copyrights, security, and electronic media; respect the rights and property of others; obtain prior approval from information technology management before downloading applications; and observe lab and classroom rules and procedures.
- transmitting communication in any form where the content, meaning, transmission, or distribution of the message would violate any applicable law or regulation
- using HCC’s information technology resources for private financial gain
- copying HCC’s licensed software for personal use, transferring software to non-HCC equipment or modifying it in an unauthorized manner
- Disrupting other network users, services, or system resources, including distributing unsolicited advertising, creating or propagating computer viruses, transmitting chain letters, slanderous, or harassing materials, or gaining unauthorized entry to any network.
- Abusing, disrupting, or threatening the viability of any system or network.
- accessing information resources without proper authorization from the data owner
- intentional corruption or misuse of information
- downloading the following prohibited applications: file and music sharing, chat, and instant messaging

HCC’s Annual Disclosure required by section 668.12 of the HEOA
Students are responsible for complying with section 668.14 of the HEOA (Higher Education Opportunity Act), the provision prohibiting illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. Downloading or sharing copyrighted music, videos, or games without permission from the copyright owner can result in:
- a criminal penalty of 5 years in prison and $250,000 in fines, even for a first offense.
- a civil penalty of $750 or higher per illegal song
Upon login to college technology resources, students are agreeing to follow college policies and standards. Students suspected of violating such policies are subject to the disciplinary process set forth in the Student Code of Conduct. Students found to be in violation are subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension and expulsion.
The college may use several methods to detect and deter illegal P2P file sharing:
- Bandwidth shaping to prioritize traffic based on the academic and business needs of the college.
- A URL filtering device to identify, block and redirect any discovered illegal P2P traffic
- Network traffic monitoring to identify, trace and investigate continuous high bandwidth users
- Reporting students who engage in suspected illegal behaviors for investigation and possible disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct.
