On-Campus Internships, Off-Campus Internships, and Micro-Internships

At Howard Community College, we connect you with a broad array of internship opportunities that will provide professional work experience, including on-campus internships, off-campus internships, and micro internships. During COVID-19, many internships are being offered remotely or virtually. By choosing to intern, you can explore careers before you graduate. Internships offer many benefits, including: possible academic credit, potential to earn income, networking with employers, and experience for your resume.


Take the following steps to get started in the HCC internship program:

  1. Check Eligibility - You must have completed 12 college credits and have a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
  2. Create Your Resume - If you need assistance, we have online resources available to assist you.
  3. Schedule an appointment with Amy Crawford, Assistant Director of Internships and Cooperative Education, to discuss internship options and begin your search. Call 443-518-1340 for an appointment.

Our office partners with the Federal government's Workforce Recruitment Program, which connects students with disabilities with summer internship positions.

  • On-Campus Internship Program

    Counseling and Career Services oversees the paid on-campus internship program for students who are interested in gaining experience while interning on campus. Many departments on campus participate in the program.

    Application Process: Available positions are listed on Handshake ( Interested students should apply directly to department supervisors and schedule an appointment with Amy Crawford, Assistant Director of Internships and Cooperative Education, or Zana Watson, Internship Assistant, to discuss the program requirements.

    Salary/Duration: Students participating in the program are paid $13.50 for up to 15 hours per week for 15 weeks during the fall and spring semesters.

    Program Requirements: All students participating in the on-campus internship program, regardless of funding source, must do the following:

    • Develop 3 measurable learning objectives for work to be accomplished over the course of the semester
    • Meet weekly or bi-weekly with their HCC department supervisor for support and guidance
    • Submit a mid-semester report and end-of-semester report to Counseling and Career Services    documenting your progress and accomplishments
    • Engage in one professional development activity each semester

    Work-Study On-Campus Internships: Counseling and Career Services has partnered with Financial Aid Services to convert some work-study jobs into work-study on-campus internships. These work-study internships are listed on the Work-Study Internship Board.

    On-Campus Micro-Internships

    Micro-internships are paid, short-term, career-related projects for currently enrolled HCC students in degree-seeking programs. Positions are 5-40 total hours over a specified number of weeks. This is a new initiative, and positions are currently being developed. Positions will be posted on Handshake (, throughout the semester.

    • Micro-interns develop 1-2 measurable learning objectives
    • Micro-interns submit final reports
    • Supervisors will provide supervision throughout
    • Supervisors complete end-of-semester student evaluations
    • Micro-interns are paid $13.50 per hour

    Your resume is a key document in your job search as it represents you to employers before they meet you in person. Its purpose is to get you invited for an interview, and therefore it must describe how your skills, experience and training match a job’s requirements and meet an employer’s needs.

    To get help with writing a resume that will create a strong impression, we suggest that you take advantage of the following services:

  • Interviews

    The interview is your opportunity to convince the employer that you are the most qualified candidate for the job opening. Thorough preparation is the best way to ensure a successful interview. Here are some useful tools and services that will help you prepare.

  • Cover Letter

    A cover letter promotes you, presenting a compelling case that you have the interest, skills, training and experience to perform well in a given job or internship. Cover letters are best when you can articulate the fit between the company/position needs and your experiences.
