Student Completion
In the Completion Services Office at HCC, we provide guidance and support to students along their individual pathways. Whether your goal is graduation, transfer or career advancement, we can help you get there from here!
Our office is dedicated to:
- Assisting with goal setting, study skills improvement, and academic planning
- Providing early academic interventions to enhance student performance in the classroom
- Facilitating communication among students, faculty, and completion staff
- Providing academic support to athletic teams
- Referring students to appropriate resources
- Clarifying students' understanding of academic and college policies
- Helping students understand and move through the transfer and graduation processes
Academic Standing
Part of getting there is understanding where you are along the way.
More than just the measure of your success at HCC, your academic standing is fundamental to all your college-related goals and aspirations. Academic standing is so important that colleges and universities have academic standing policies and the U.S. Department of Education has satisfactory academic progress (SAP) policies for recipients of federal financial aid.
Academic standing is integral to:
- Earning your certificate or degree
- Admission to certain HCC Programs, especially clinical health programs
- Your ability to transfer to particular institutions and/or particular programs with institutions
- Maintaining eligibility to receive financial aid and many scholarships
- Maintaining eligibility for Veterans Administration education benefits
- Maintaining eligibility to be a member of an official college athletic team
- Maintaining status as an F1 international student at HCC
It is very important to be proactive in contacting your academic advisor if anything is affecting your ability to earn passing grades in your classes. Your advisor will work with you to identify strategies that will help you succeed. In addition, Completion Services coordinates the HCC Early Alert Program using Starfish Retention Solutions to inform you of your progress in key courses and provide resources for additional support.
Academic standing and satisfactory academic process are calculated at the end of each major semester (fall and spring). Students are in one of the following academic standing statuses:

Academic Probation
Academic Probation: a student on academic warning who does not achieve at least a 2.0 semester GPA and does not meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement will be placed on academic probation. The student will be limited to a maximum of 8 credits for the next semester.
- Students are notified of academic probation by the Office of Records, Registration & Veterans’ Affairs and/or Financial Aid Services.
- Students are required to meet with an advisor in Admissions and Advising (RCF 242).

Academic Standing Appeal
A student on academic suspension with extenuating circumstances that can be documented is eligible to file an appeal. This applies to first time suspension only.
Students submit a letter of appeal with supporting documentation by the deadline stated in the academic suspension letter. All letters of appeal must be submitted to the Learning Assistance Center (RCF 340).
The Academic Appeals Committee will review all letters of appeal and supporting documentation and make a decision to accept or deny the appeal. Students will be notified of the committee's decision by mail and HCC email within two weeks of submission of appeal. Students readmitted to HCC will be placed on academic probation and limited to eight credits.

Academic Suspension
A student on academic probation who does not achieve at least a 2.0 semester GPA and does not meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement will be placed on academic suspension. The student may not attend HCC during the next major semester.
- Students are notified of academic suspension by the Office of Records, Registration & Veterans’ Affairs and/or Financial Aid Services.
- Students are not eligible to attend HCC for the next major semester.
- Students may appeal academic suspension. Students suspended more than one time are not eligible to attend HCC for one calendar year.

Academic Warning
A student will be placed on academic warning after attempting 12 credits and not meeting the minimum cumulative GPA requirement.
- Students are notified of academic warning by the Office of Records, Registration & Veterans’ Affairs and/or Financial Aid Services.
- Students are required to complete a self-assessment form . Paper copies are available in the Learning Assistance Center, Admissions and Advising, and Financial Aid.
- Students are required to meet with a designated Academic Success Coordinator. Academic Warning students will not be able to enroll in classes for the next semester without doing so.

Dean's List
Dean's List: Full-time students with a grade point average of 3.50 or better who have completed 12 credit hours with no F, L, or W grade in the nominated semester are eligible for nomination to the Dean’s List. Part-time students with a 3.5 GPA who have completed 12 or more credits overall and 6 credits in the nominated semester with no F, L, or W grade are eligible for nomination to the Dean’s List for Part-Time Students.

Good Academic Standing
Good Academic Standing: students who have earned a 2.0 GPA or higher in the semester are considered in good academic standing. If cumulative GPA is below 2.0, students’ academic standing is determined by both attempted credits and a minimum cumulative GPA, as follows:
Attempted Credits Minimum Cumulative GPA Required 12 – 15 1.0 16 – 30 1.5 31 – 40 1.75 41 or more 2.0

Readmission After Suspension
Students who have been suspended and do not attend HCC for one or more semesters must contact the Learning Assistance Center at 443-518-1320 for readmission. Students readmitted to HCC will be placed on academic probation and limited to eight credits.
