Our unique CPA exam candidacy program is individually mapped for each student to complete the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy educational requirements, as well as provide preparation and practice for passing each section of the CPA exam. Depending on your previous education, you may need to take all the required courses, just a few classes, or you may just want to refresh in preparing for the exam.

Are Howard Community College classes accepted by the MD Board of Public Accountancy?
Yes. The MD Board of Public Accountancy requires that accounting courses be completed at an accredited institution. HCC is fully accredited by Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
I have an undergraduate degree NOT in accounting. Where do I start?
Nine accounting courses, one ethics course and seven business related courses are required along with a bachelor’s degree for CPA Exam candidacy. An advisor can help determine what classes you would need to take. For example, accounting courses you took as part of your degree program may count towards the MD Board of Public Accountancy requirements. Even if you have never taken an accounting course, as long as you have a bachelor’s degree, you can get started on the path towards becoming a CPA.
How long will it take for me to qualify to take the CPA exam?
It depends on your schedule and the courses you need to take. The educational requirements for CPA Exam candidacy can be completed in as little as a year.
What is the CPA exam like?
The CPA exam is made up of four separate parts:
- Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR): covering Financial, Governmental, and Non Profit Accounting
- Auditing and Attestation (AUD): a four-hour exam covering Audit and Attest process
- Regulations (REG): covering Federal Taxation and Business Law
- Business Environment and Concepts (BEC): covering Governance, Management, Information Systems

Students from all backgrounds enroll in these courses to prepare for CPA exam candidacy. From working professionals in fields as diverse a law, business, sciences, engineering, and technology; to those changing careers or returning to the workforce.
Is it realistic to balance coursework with work and family life?
Only you can know for sure if this is the right fit for you and for your life. Many of our students are working adults with family and other obligations. To fit those busy schedules, we offer classes during the day and evening, and many classes are offered online. Our class schedule is planned and guaranteed for 12-months, giving you the ability to plan ahead.
I'm already a CPA, do these courses fulfill continuing professional education (CPE) requirements?
Yes. The MD Board of Public Accountancy accepts our courses to fulfill the continuing education requirement for active license CPA status in MD.
