Q: How do you describe resilience?
A: Resilience is not a trait that people are born with. It involves behaviors, thoughts, and actions that can be learned and developed by anyone. We need to continually build our resilience skills throughout our lives, to succeed, both personally and professionally.
Q: What can managers do to help employees build resiliency?
A: Take time to tune in to the emotional aspects of managing. Right now, many people are struggling with loneliness. Connect with your employees one-on-one, not just as a team. Start with, “How are you holding up?” Share how you are feeling, too. And, have some fun. Talk about a hobby you’ve started or what shows you are watching. Make yourself real. The more you know people, the better your team will function.
Q: How can I improve my own resilience?
A: Take time for self care. Focus on what you can control. Practice gratitude; make note of three things each day for which to be thankful. Be specific. Simple things can often be reminders of the good we have in our lives, especially when times are tough.
