Build your written and oral communication competencies while gaining valuable knowledge and skills to succeed in the workplace. Choose from one of the two options below.
Professional English Certificate
Earn a noncredit Professional English certificate by completing at least three Professional English classes listed below within 18 months. Course offerings will vary each semester and will be posted on howardcc.edu/elc/classes.
Advanced Pronunciation Training
Reduce your foreign accent and learn to pronounce English in a way that will make others understand you better.
Idioms are everywhere in the American workplace. "Roll up your sleeves" and learn how to use them with confidence when writing and speaking in common business scenarios. *Online option available depending on semester.*
English for Business Communication
Improve your written and oral communication around these topics: cultural diversity, socializing, using the telephone, negotiating, making presentations, and participating in meetings. Learn more about cultural norms associated with communication in business.
English for Customer Service
Improve your English skills while you train for a position in customer service, especially working in retail sales at a store or working in an office. Learn and practice new vocabulary and develop the cultural skills you will need to help customers in person or on the phone. You will role-play how to handle problems and complaints and also learn about the responsibilities you have to your supervisors in the workplace. Finally, you’ll get some tips about finding an appropriate job.
English for Marketing and Social Media
Use social media and marketing more effectively by mastering the vocabulary and grammatical conventions associated with marketing through social media. *Online option available depending on semester.*
English for Professional Leadership
Develop language skills in the area of business leadership. This course focuses on current management topics including leadership styles, motivation, recruiting, marketing, use of teams, strategy, dealing with change, managing across cultures, downsizing, finances, and risk management and decision making. A key component of the course is exposure to contemporary management vocabulary.
English for Small Businesses
Learn English in a meaningful, real business setting. In this interactive, hybrid class, you’ll be learning the skills and the language to set up a “virtual” business. Work with classmates (your business partners) in class and online to identify a marketing niche, establish a business and assign duties, develop a business plan, and advertise. By the end of the class, you should have developed the structure for a “virtual” business.
Grammar for Business
Improve the accuracy of your spoken and written English using actual business scenarios. This class will focus on grammar that is needed and used by business professionals.
How Americans Think: Surviving the Workplace
Learn and examine cultural differences and their impact in the workplace. You will gain an understanding of how Americans think and how this affects different aspects of the job such as communication, employee relationships, and teamwork. You will also examine their own personal and cultural beliefs in relation to work and how this impacts their “survival” in the workplace. Finally, you will learn strategies for developing cultural intelligence and cultural competence. Course includes online videos, selected readings and research, activities, and discussions.
Learn to manipulate grammar and vocabulary to make your meaning clear in various types of professional writing such as e-mail correspondence, conventions, memos, short reports, summaries, business letters, cover letters, and resumes. *Online option available depending on semester.*
Six Steps to Clearer Pronunciation *Online*
Practice pronunciation in the comfort of your own home, anywhere in the world! Your instructor will guide you through detailed video lessons and assign exercises for more practice on your own. Videotape yourself with easy-to-use technology, and your instructor will respond privately to you with feedback and suggestions. A webcam with a microphone is required!

The English Language Center at Howard Community College offers professional English tutoring for international English speakers. This tutoring is ideal for students who want to focus on one part of their professional English, such as writing or pronunciation, as well as students who need a more flexible schedule.
