English for Career Preparation

Develop your English while learning job-specific vocabulary and workplace skills. Our courses will prepare you for a variety of careers.

  • English for Careers

    Course offerings will vary each semester and will be posted on howardcc.edu/elc/classes. Courses in this program are free tuition; material fees collected at registration.

    Basic English and Career Exploration (Level 1-2)
    Improve your English skills while exploring careers. Learn about educational and training opportunities while developing the skills you need to find a job and succeed in the workplace. 

    English for Careers: Basic Computer Skills (Level 2+)
    Improve your computer abilities while learning English. You will learn the basics of using a computer, starting with learning the parts of the computer and eventually learning the basics of Microsoft Word. If you don’t know how to create a Word document, this class is for you. This course will also help you improve your English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. 

    English for Careers: Bookkeeping Certificate ESL Support Class *NEW*(Level 4+)
    Improve your English while preparing to become a certified bookkeeper. In this class, you will learn vocabulary and other English skills essential for bookkeepers. This course is designed to support students taking Towson University's Online Accounting & Bookkeeping QuickBooks Course, which has additional costs associated with it. 
    Mon, Wed 7:30pm-9pm Aug 31-Dec 2 (Zoom) 

    English for Careers: CDL Permit Preparation (Level 2+)
    Improve your English while preparing to get your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit. In this class, you will learn the vocabulary needed to understand the Motor Vehicle Administration’s (MVA) CDL test along with other English skills that are essential for commercial drivers. This course is designed to support students before they take the CDL-315 Commercial Driver's License Permit Preparation Course and CDL license training, which have additional costs associated with them. 

    English for Careers: Childcare *NEW*(Level 3+)
    Improve your English while preparing to become a childcare provider. In this class, you will learn the vocabulary and English skills needed to be successful in childcare classes. This course is designed to support students taking Child Growth & Development, which has additional costs associated with it.

    English for Careers: CNA ESL Support Class (Level 3+)
    Improve your English while preparing to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). It will provide English language support, as well as the hands-on knowledge needed to work in the healthcare field. This course is designed to support students taking the CNA training and clinical courses, which have additional costs associated with them.     English for Careers: Computer Skills for the Office (Level 2+)
    Improve your computer abilities while learning English. You will learn computer skills to work in an office. Learn to use computer applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to create and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Improve your internet skills as you learn to research jobs. This course will also help you improve your English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. 
     
    English for Careers: Construction (Level 2+)
    Improve your English skills while learning vocabulary needed for jobs in trades such as construction, green jobs, and manufacturing. Learn about the American workplace, OSHA safety standards, and how to interview. You will also focus on improving your reading, writing, listening, speaking skills. 
     
    English for Careers: Cybersecurity (Level 4+)
    This course will introduce advanced-level ESL learners to the field of cybersecurity. Learn about virus and malware basics, network, Wi-Fi, and mobile security, along with additional topics. You will also focus on improving your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. 

    English for Careers: Information Technology *NEW*(Level 4+)
    Improve your English while preparing to become a certified IT support specialist.In this class, you will learn the vocabulary and English skills needed to be successful in IT support. This course is designed to support students taking the Google IT Support Certificate. **This course requires potential students to complete an application.     English for Careers: PCT ESL Support Class (Level 3+)
    Are you currently a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)? Do you want to improve your career prospects by taking by becoming a Patient Care Technician? If so, this class is for you!! It will provide additional English language support, exposure medical vocabulary, and hands-on knowledge needed to get hired in a fast paced health care environment.  You will also focus on improving your skills in English reading, writing, listening, and speaking. **This course requires potential students to complete an application.     English for Careers: Real Estate *NEW*(Level 4+)
    Improve your English while preparing to become a real estate agent. In this class, you will learn the vocabulary and English skills needed to be successful in real estate. This course is designed to support students taking the Real Estate Principles and Practices for Salespersons course, which has additional costs associated with it.

    English for Careers: Vision Assistant (Level 4+)
    Interested in a career in a health care field? This class is for students interested in working in an eye doctor’s office but who need a little extra practice with their English language skills. You will also focus on improving your skills in English reading, writing, listening, and speaking. **This course requires potential students to complete an application.   • Skilled Immigrant Program

    Course offerings will vary each semester and will be posted on howardcc.edu/elc/classes. Courses in this program are free tuition; material fees collected at registration.

    Introduction to the American Job Search (Level 2-3)
    Learn to set goals, search for jobs, and choose a satisfying career pathway. You will hear from other immigrants who have created successful career paths. Class includes online Zoom sessions and off-line activities for intermediate English language learners.

    Advanced American Job Search (Level 4+)
    Set career goals, learn about career resources, and hear from interesting guest speakers in banking, education, healthcare, and technology industries. Resume preparation and practice interviews will be covered. Upon completion, you may be eligible to enroll in Career Connections for International Professionals (CCIP). 

    Career Connections for International Professionals (CCIP) (Level 4+)
    This course offers practical assistance and expert advice in preparing you to advance your career. Explore building a professional network, interviewing successfully, creating a career action plan, navigating the U.S work environment and much more. For advanced-level ESL learners; you must first take Advanced American Job Search and complete an application. Click Here for application.
