Midday Master Classes

Join us for our new Master Classes, presented by subject matter experts in a comfortable, interactive setting!

Light refreshments will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to enjoy during the discussion.

Midday Master Classes meet on Fridays from 10am-1pm.

Individual course cost: $25 per Master Class.

Midday Master Class #1: Rebels in the Land *NEW!*
Analyze the causes, major events, and impact of three colonial rebellions in Virginia and Pennsylvania prior to the American Revolution: Bacon’s Rebellion (1676-1677), the Paxton Boys (1764), and the Black Boys Rebellion (1765). Presenter: Roger G. Swartz, M.A.Ed., M.P.A., U.S. Colonial and Early Republic historian and author.

Midday Master Class #2: Worlds Apart: Finding Hidden Planets in the Stars *NEW!*
Discover the wonders of the night sky through experiments, computer simulations, and interactive lecture. Find out how planets and stars form, how to spot constellations, and how HCC students are helping to find planets orbiting distant stars. Presenter: Brendan Diamond, Ph.D., HCC associate professor of Astronomy and Physics.

Explore the archaeological wonders of the Greek islands known as the Cyclades. We will be examining such famous islands as Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Delos among other islands of great historical interest. These islands and the sea routes that linked them were of critical importance to the Ancient Greeks. Presenter: Bill McGowan, M.A., Latin and Greek Languages and Culture.

Midday Master Class #4: Edo to Van Gogh: Japanese Art and its Influence on Modern Masters *NEW!*
Did you know that Impressionism and other modern art movements, although groundbreaking and impressively original in their own right, owe their inspiration to Japanese Art? Examine some of the most popular artists of early modernism and how Japanese wood block prints in particular formed their much-admired styles. Presenter: Tamora Martin-Kowalski, M.A., HCC adjunct professor, Division of Arts and Humanities.
