Howard Community College offers this 40-hour training, which provides a comprehensive overview of conflict resolution and intensive/interactive mediation skills building and satisfies the training requirement for designation by Maryland Circuit Courts as a mediator. Training involves small group discussions and exercises, coached role playing, videos, and lecture. Manual provided. Please bring lunch for Saturday sessions. Instructor Barbara Blake Williams has a private practice and has served as court-appointed mediator for several courts. She holds an M.P.A. in public administration, M.Ed. in counseling, and a J.D. 4.0 CEUs.
Divorce has many dimensions, some of them financial. This course is for mediators who want to help spouses contemplating separation and divorce discuss financial issues and distribution of marital property. Topics include Maryland law on spousal support and marital property, distribution of assets, tax consequences, ethical issues, special topics, and relevant mediation skills. Class format: small group exercises, discussions, simulations, video, and lecture. Successful course completion satisfies training requirements regarding marital property issues under Maryland Judicial Rule 17-104(d). Instructor Barbara Blake Williams has a private practice in mediation. She is the past president of the Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution and an assessor member of its Certification Committee.
