Howard Community College offers this 40-hour training, which provides a comprehensive overview of conflict resolution and intensive/interactive mediation skills building and satisfies the training requirement for designation by Maryland Circuit Courts as a mediator. Training involves small group discussions and exercises, coached role playing, videos, and lecture. Manual provided. Please bring lunch for Saturday sessions. Instructor Barbara Blake Williams has a private practice and has served as court-appointed mediator for several courts. She holds an M.P.A. in public administration, M.Ed. in counseling, and a J.D. 4.0 CEUs.

Conflict Resolution Neutrality
This course examines the elusive concept of “mediator neutrality.” Workshop format is interactive, exploring the ethical and behavioral hallmarks of mediator neutrality through class discussion and analysis of mediation videos. Note: This course covers material congruent with Judicial Rule 17 Continuing Education requirements and the MPME mandate for Continuing Education in mediation ethics. Topics discussed will be: different concepts meant by mediators when they talk of “neutrality,” three aspects of neutrality important to consider in the practice of mediation (process, content, and relationship), and mediator behaviors which convey a sense of neutrality. .2 CEUs.

Conflict Resolution POISE Under Pressure
This course presents a tool for ethical decision-making for mediators captured in the acronym “POISE”. Course content includes how to identify an ethical dilemma and use of the tool in resolving ethical dilemmas. Workshop format includes discussion and applied exercises. Note: This course covers material congruent with Judicial Rule 17 Continuing Education requirements and the MPME mandate for Continuing Education in mediation ethics. Topics include: basic definitions of “ethics” and of “ethical dilemma,” terms and ideas that make up the acronym POISE, and how to use the POISE tool when making ethical decisions, in the role of mediator. .2 CEUs.

Mediating Property, Finance and Fiscal Future: Marital Property Issues in Divorce
Divorce has many dimensions, some of them financial. This course is for mediators who want to help spouses contemplating separation and divorce discuss financial issues and distribution of marital property. Topics include Maryland law on spousal support and marital property, distribution of assets, tax consequences, ethical issues, special topics, and relevant mediation skills. Class format: small group exercises, discussions, simulations, video, and lecture. Successful course completion satisfies training requirements regarding marital property issues under Maryland Judicial Rule 17-104(d). Instructor Barbara Blake Williams has a private practice in mediation. She is the past president of the Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution and an assessor member of its Certification Committee.
