Art & Culture in China

China culture study abroad

Program Description

Explore a different and exciting country - study abroad in China this summer! Visit ancient sites, such as the Great Wall of China, E-Mei Mountain, and the Forbidden City all while learning the impact these sites have on China today. You will also study Chinese culture and language and stay in student housing at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China.

Participants will be paired with a Chinese university student to assist in learning language and culture. If you’re looking to learn about a different way of life in the “Middle Kingdom,” this is the program for you. Please note this study abroad program will involve a lot of walking.

The application deadline for all study abroad programs is November 30, 2018.

  • Credits

    HUMN-107 “Arts, Cultures, and Ideas” (3 Credits)

    SABR-903 “Study Abroad” (1 Credit)

    Students may take this course for credit or not-for-credit. HCC students who wish to receive college credits for the HUMN-107 course are required to register for the SABR-903 course as well. In order to register, students must meet with the International Education Program Coordinator during the application process.

  • Schedule

    May 24 - June 08, 2019 (Tentative)

    Participants will begin their journey in the commercial center of Chengdu, China, where they will be staying at the Sichuan University, studying and visiting attractions of historical, cultural, and artistic significance, such as the Mt Emei, the Sanxingdui Bronze Art Museum, the Wuhou Temple, and the Giant Buddha in Leshan. The group will travel to Beijing, the capital of modern China, where they will go on excursions to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the 798 Art District, the National Opera, and the Silk Market.

    Arrival in Chengdu

    Sunday (May 26)

    Orientation on campus of Sichuan University & Visit Chengdu Museum, Sichuan Provincial Art Museum and Old Township of Chengdu

    7:45 AM - 8:45 AM: Breakfast

    9:00 AM - 1:00 PM: (each class run about 50 min.)

    Class 1: Tai-Chi (Taiji)

    Class 2: Chinese Language

    Class 3: Philosophy/ Chinese history

    Class 4: Chinese Arts Survey – Painting/ Music/ film/ calligraphy

    1:00 PM - 2:30 PM: Lunch

    3:00 PM - 5:30 PM: Tour to artist’s studio, art gallery/Panda conservation Park/local market tour

    Saturday (June 1)

    Visit Song Dynasty Buddhist Sculpture in Dazu County in Chongqing

    Sunday (June 2)

    E-Mei Mountain - legendary scenery and Buddhist art

    Monday (June 3) – Thursday (June 6)

    7:45 AM - 8:45 AM: Breakfast

    9:00 AM - 1:00 PM: (each class is 50 minutes)

    Class 1: Tai-Chi (Taiji)

  • Program Cost

    The tentative cost for the study abroad program is $4,200. This fee does not include the additional three credit course fee or one credit study abroad course fee. The payment timeline is as follows:

    • $500 Program Deposit Fee (to be paid upon submission of study abroad application)
    • $1,850 Initial payment due by January 11, 2019
    • $1,850 Final Payment due by February 8, 2019

    *HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the program up to 10% due to increased costs/flights and/or currency fluctuations.

    The Program Cost Includes:

    • Roundtrip airfare
    • Transportation within the country
    • Some meals
    • Accommodation
    • All planned excursions

    The Program Cost Does Not Include:

    • Visa (about $140)
    • Some meals
    • Free time expenses
