Become a Construction Apprentice to Earn While You Learn
Construction managers plan, coordinate, budget, and supervise construction projects. They’re responsible for preparing timetables and schedules; working with supervisors, clients, and subcontractors; complying with legal requirements and regulations; and ensuring the successful completion of construction projects.
The average annual salary for construction managers in Maryland is $107,700, higher than the national median pay, and employment in this field is projected to grow 11 percent by 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. With this growth, newly trained construction managers will be needed to handle the increased workload. Positions will also be in demand as current workers retire or transfer to other positions.
Interested construction management professionals or those who are currently employed by a licensed construction company can now enroll in HCC’s Construction Management Apprenticeship program. The college’s certificate program, on which the apprenticeship program is based, has been in effect since 2009.
Students completing the apprenticeship program will earn 34 credits and be well-positioned to pursue an associate degree and transfer to a four-year university. They will compile a portfolio demonstrating competencies with skills such as construction safety, field surveying, blueprint reading, material testing, and project closeout. Students will be eligible to take the Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) certification exam.
About the Program
The only program of its kind in Maryland, HCC’s Construction Management Apprenticeship program prepares you to succeed in architectural, engineering, and general contracting jobs. The curriculum includes lecture, lab, and 2,000 hours of on-the-job experiences per year.
After successfully completing a one-week industry orientation, you will begin two years of courses at HCC, while working full-time at a local construction company. You will have the opportunity for employers to view your resume for potential employment and you must be hired by a participating employer by the start of the program. If you are currently working with an employer we welcome the opportunity for them to become a participating partner.
Classes are held once a week – typically on a Friday – allowing 4-5 other work days. Upon completion, you will earn a Construction Management Certificate from HCC and will be eligible to take the Certified Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) exam. You will also have earned 4,000 hours’ worth of wages.

In order to participate in the Construction Management Apprenticeship, you must:
- Be 18 years or older by start of the program.
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Be College ready in English and Math.
- Have a driver’s license and clean driving record or have access to reliable transportation.
How to Apply & Enroll
Once you have successfully completed the college admissions process, you will need to submit a secondary application to the construction management apprenticeship program.

Three Ways to Earn Construction Management Credentials at HCC
HCC offers three unique options for students to prepare for success in architectural, engineering, project management, or general contracting jobs.
A.A.S. Degree – Ideal for students who plan to eventually pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Apprenticeship Program – Ideal for students who want to pursue an education while simultaneously earning a full-time salary in a Construction Management role and are interested in the possibility of having an employer contribute to their tuition costs.
Certificate Program – Ideal for students who are not certain they want to pursue a bachelor’s degree (but want to earn credits toward one) and want to improve job prospects by earning an intermediate credential on their way to pursuing an associate degree.
