Dance, Theatre, & Audio Video Production
Develop your creative potential through the interpretative arts of dance and theatre.
The Theatre, Dance, and Entertainment Technology academic programs in HCC's Arts & Humanities Division are committed to helping you develop your individual creativity and artistic viewpoint.
In this department, you are provided a solid foundation of theory and technique, exposure to aesthetic and cultural diversity, collaborative skills, practical experience on and off the stage, and ample opportunities for performance. The learning process is strengthened by faculty who are both excellent teachers and practicing artists, and who know what it's like to be in rehearsals, meet deadlines, and juggle responsibilities.
Theatre
The Theatre Department presents a variety of performances showcasing students throughout the year, including fall and spring plays and musicals, touring children’s theatre, showcases, and outdoor Shakespeare performances. For theatre majors, the Theatre associate of arts transfer degree is designed for students intending to complete a bachelor's degree.
A letter of recognition in Theatre/Performance is awarded for students who have demonstrated basic competencies in the area of theatre performance through a series of designated courses, and the Theatre/Technical letter of recognition is offered for students successfully completing a course series in technical theatre.
Dance
HCC’s associate degree in Dance Performance prepares students for transfer to a four-year university bachelor’s program in dance. Our Dance Program produces and hosts multiple events each season:
- The Dance Faculty Concert, which features the choreographed work and performance of HCC dance faculty members
- The Student Dance Showcase, which features choreographed work and performance of HCC students
- The Howard County Dance Festival, which provides opportunities for local dancers to learn, share, and enjoy their craft
- The HCC Dance Company Concert, which features choreographed work of guest artists and instructors, creating dance pieces for HCC students
Entertainment Technology
If you're passionate about the technology side of entertainment, HCC's newest program educates students for in-demand careers as audio, lighting, video, and live event audio-visual systems specialists. Offering rigorous, hands-on learning, the Entertainment Technology program trains students to support presentations, performances, and events at convention centers, college and universities, corporate and government events, and theaters.
Partnerships with local business and organizations provide students real-world training opportunities. Howard Community College is one of only two community colleges offering this program in the mid-Atlantic region. Entertainment Technology offers both an associate of applied science and a certificate.
Audio Video Media Production
HCC's Audio Video Media program will prepare you for paths into the exciting fields of electronic media, through coursework in story development, hands-on creative digital production, and media writing. HCC digital AVMP students work to master a wide range of skills, including writing and production, to prepare for transfer and future careers in television, radio, film, and the creation of web content.
Students are immersed in hands-on learning in HCC's state-of-the-art, all-digital facility that includes a television studio, and an editing and production classroom/lab.
