Associate Professor, Physics/Engineering
Chair, Engineering and Technology
Education and Certifications:
B.S., University of Maryland College Park
M.S., University of Maryland College Park
Biography:Prof. Edelen teaches in the engineering transfer and engineering technology programs, with a focus on courses related to mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering. His technical interests include structural analysis, mechanism design, artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, and chaotic dynamics in mechanical systems. Mark’s graduate research focused on the design of multi-agent robotic systems with behavior based on the swarm dynamics found in biological systems (i.e. fish, birds, insects). Prior to teaching full-time, Mark gained several years of professional experience in structural analysis and mechanical design, including projects ranging from submarines to aircraft radar to mail-sorting machines. In recent years, Mark has investigated the use of 3D printing and related technologies in engineering prototyping and education. He collaborated with other faculty and staff to launch HCC’s 3D Innovation Hub and the Additive Manufacturing Certificate program. In the near future, Prof. Edelen intends to further explore the impact of additive manufacturing on mechanical design through topology optimization and generative design tools.
