“At our office we have spirited discussions about giving because everyone has something near and dear to their heart. We continue to give to HCC because the college is a part of the fabric of our community,” explains Kevin Kelehan, partner at Carney, Kelehan, Bresler, Bennett & Scherr LLP (Carney Kelehan) in Columbia. Carney Kelehan’s support for the HCC Educational Foundation dates back to the 1980’s.
“We believe that sharing our time and talents with community organizations makes us better lawyers and enriches the communities in which we live and work,” adds Kevin. At the mid-size law firm, all of the attorneys are active participants within the community, serving on numerous community organizations and boards. Kevin served on the HCC Educational Foundation’s board of directors for several years and also chaired the campaign for scholarships which was paired with the opening of the college’s health science building. He recently chaired REPartee, the anniversary fundraiser for Rep Stage, the resident equity theater at the College. In addition to assisting with scholarship fundraising efforts, he and several of the attorneys at Carney Kelehan attend the HCC Educational Foundation’s special events held throughout the year. Kevin adds, “ as a firm we really enjoy attending the HCC Educational Foundation events like Vino Scholastico, Hunan Manor and other special events at the College. The events are always well planned and well-executed, and they give us a chance to connect with members from the community; and, we can see a direct impact from our special event sponsorships because they support the future workforce in our community.”
He continues, “There is something to be said for an organization with a strong charitable giving record. We always strive to get our young professionals involved as soon as they come on board. Relationships continue when you get involved, people remember that you have a commitment by your participation.” Kevin shares that charitable giving and community involvement is both a personal decision and a business decision. “Being involved also allows us to become more knowledgeable about the issues, concerns and activities of our local communities.”
With three sisters in the nursing profession, Kevin understands the importance of allied health professionals. In 2010 he pledged his support for the future education of students in allied health with the Kelehan Family Stipulated Scholarship. Then in 2012, the firm also pledged their support with the Carney Kelehan Fund Stipulated Scholarship. Both scholarships support single parenting students currently enrolled in the nursing program. Kevin explains, “Scholarships give people a head start and education creates opportunity. One of my greatest joys is reading the thank you letters and meeting the students whose lives we have touched.”
