Danielle Torres, Student

Danielle Torres
At HCC, I have come out of my closed shell and involved myself in the school community, and I’ve improved as a student overall.
A science and mathematics enthusiast, Danielle found her place in the Silas Craft Collegians program.

A lifelong enthusiast of science and mathematics, Danielle knew by middle school she wanted to be an engineer. Attending Phelps ACE Senior High School – a STEM school – gave her the opportunity to take electronic, computer, and engineering classes, which furthered her interest in the engineering field.

After graduating high school, Danielle came to Howard Community College (HCC) with plans to obtain her associate degree in electrical engineering and an electronics technology certificate. She says she knew HCC was the perfect choice after attending the Silas Craft Collegians information night.

“I joined Silas Craft because the environment I was entering was new to make and would be a support system for me entering college,” she said. “After hearing stories of the other Collegians, I knew that this is what I was looking for in a college experience.”

The program also awarded Danielle with a scholarship, which she says is affording her the opportunity to further her education.

She credits HCC and the Silas Craft Collegians Program for helping her grow as a person and excel academically. Outside of the program, she is currently the president of the Caribbean Student Association at the college.

“At HCC, I have come out of my closed shell and involved myself in the school community,” she said. “And I’ve improved as a student overall.”
