Akbar Tolbert, General Studies in Science Student

“I was accepted to several other universities, but I couldn't afford to attend. With the help of the Pathway Scholarship and the Schoenbrodt Honors Scholarship, I’m able to afford a great education without student loans or working a second job.”

Akbar notes that the scholarship support has allowed him more time to focus on his studies and to become involved in student activities. And he is squeezing every last drop out of that gift. In addition to being a Schoenbrodt Honors program student, he is  Editor in Chief of the HCC Times student-run campus newspaper, the President of the Gay Straight Alliance, involved with the student government association, a member of Phi Theta Kappa national honor society, and so far has made the honor roll each semester. Akbar’s most memorable role at HCC, though, may be joining the White House press corps to photograph First Lady Michelle Obama during her fall 2015 campus visit.

As a major in general studies with a science emphasis, Akbar plans to complete his associate degree in fall of 2016 and transfer into a healthcare administration and policy program at either of his dream schools - Georgetown University or UCLA.
