HCC for parents.

Sending your high school student to college can be both exciting and stressful. We want to make this time as easy as possible by providing you with information that can help you transition your high school student into college life and help you prepare for life as the parent of a college student. Whether your student is still looking at colleges or has already decided on HCC, you should find useful information here.

Why is HCC the best option for your son or daughter?

  • We provide quality education that's designed to prepare students for today's in-demand careers and we make it affordable. We don't believe that a college degree should break the bank. That's why so many thousands of high school students make HCC their college of choice every year.
  • As we are proud of saying, we provide pathways to success. Pathways to earn an associate's degree, and then a bachelor's degree, as well as pathways to careers that employers need. We know that you want the very best for your student.
  • Do you live in Columbia? Or maybe Laurel? Wherever you live, your student can find an HCC location nearby.
  • Best of all, there is a profound emphasis on support here. We have great professors and friendly, dedicated staff who will educate and guide your student through college.

Do you know how to navigate financial aid in college? Find out what you need to know and how you can help your student.

  • Financial Aid
    • Get started with financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at
    • Include HCC's school code (008175) in the school code section of the FAFSA. You must also be admitted to HCC and have a Social Security Number (SSN) on file with Admissions and Advising before HCC can receive your FAFSA results.
    • For ease and accuracy we encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

    Satisfactory Academic Progress

    • Financial aid recipients are required to be in good academic standing and to maintain satisfactory academic progress.
    • Failure to maintain satisfactory academic progress will result in cancellation of financial aid awards.

  • Dates and Awards
    • Students seeking any type of financial aid are strongly urged to apply by March 1 priority filing deadline. Maryland residents must complete and submit the FAFSA by March 1 to be considered for special financial aid programs through the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
    • All financial aid awards are made in accordance with two criteria: demonstrated financial need and the students ability to maintain satisfactory academic progress.
    • The initial financial aid package will be based on assumed full-time status for the fall and winter/spring
    • Awards will be adjusted to actual enrollment prior to disbursement. Students may receive financial aid only for classes in which they are registered as of the last date to drop for the regular semester

    Alternative Financing

    • PLUS loans is a Title IV program which enables parents who do not have adverse credit to borrow funds to pay for educational expenses for their dependent child who is enrolled at least half-time and who is meeting the SAP requirements.
  • FAQ
    • How long does it take HCC to review and complete my student's financial aid file?
Once HCC receives a copy of your student's electronic application results from Department of Education, it can take approximately six to eight weeks to review and complete your financial aid file.
    • Why are we being asked for additional information?
The Department of Education may require additional documentation from your household to determine your student's financial aid eligibility for a number of reasons. HCC is required to collect that information to review the financial aid file and report the outcome to the Department of Education.
    • Why do we have to submit a tax return transcript directly from the IRS or use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool instead of using a personal copy?
Regulations that govern financial aid policy change frequently. Effective 2012-2013, students/parents who are required to submit federal tax return information to complete the review process of verification must request a federal tax return transcript directly from the IRS or can use the IRS Data Retrieval tool on the FAFSA to transfer their tax information directly from the IRS on to the FAFSA.
    • Will my student be eligible for Bookstore funds?
If the financial aid award(s) exceed the tuition and fee balance, the student may be eligible to receive Bookstore funds to help purchase books at the HCC Bookstore.
    • What does my student need to do to maintain financial aid?
Financial aid recipients are required to be in good academic standing and to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Failure to maintain satisfactory academic progress will result in cancellation of financial aid awards. Please visit our financial aid pages for additional policy information.
    • Will my student be eligible to receive a financial aid refund?

If the student's financial aid exceeds their tuition, fees, and bookstore charges, he/she will receive the remaining financial aid as a refund.

Howard Community College has partnered with BankMobile, a technology and payment services company, to provide faster options for receiving your HCC refunds. Students will receive a personal code in the mail at the address that is listed on file with Admissions. Once the personal code is received, the student will be instructed to log on to and they must select one of the refund preferences.

A Note About Student Record Privacy

College is a time when students become independent and take charge of their student education records. For parents, this means that you will no longer have access to your student's grades, courses, financial aid, and other information. Why? Howard Community College complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and its amendments. All institutions that receive money from the U.S. Department of Education must follow FERPA guidelines.

Need more information? Check out our FERPA page, which contains information about how your student can provide you with access to his or her educational record.

Giving makes a difference! Your support helps students along their pathways to success.
