Volunteer Opportunities

Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center has long enjoyed the support of our community and student volunteers. Our volunteer ushers support our Front of  House staff in providing the  best theatre experience for all our patrons. The continued  support from our community volunteers is one of the reasons why our patrons  enjoy high-quality theater experiences.

Horowitz Center Volunteers

  • help take tickets,
  • distribute programs,
  • assist patrons with special seating needs
  • and answer questions about upcoming performing arts events.

Best of all, Horowitz Center Volunteers get to see performances in their entirety for free, during their assigned shifts. *Not all events may be available for course credit. Please speak with your instructor about the events you need to attend for course credit.

Please note: Becoming a Horowitz Center Volunteer does not count towards Service Learning hours/credits.

To register to usher, email the Horowitz Center Box Office at boxoffice@howardcc.edu. Please include production name, date and time.

  • (HCC Theatre Productions) Skin of our Teeth (October 27 - 30, 2022)

    The Skin of Our Teeth

    By Thorton Wilder
    Directed by Bill Gillett

Meet George and Maggie Antrobus who have been married for 5,000 years, and who bear more than a casual resemblance to that first husband and wife, Adam and Eve.  They have two children, Gladys, perfect in every way, and Henry, who likes to throw rocks and was formerly known by a ‘C’ name.  There’s also their chatty maid, Sabina, who takes every opportunity to interrupt the play.  Whether he is inventing the alphabet or merely saving the world from apocalypse, George and his unique family somehow manage to survive – by the skin of their teeth.

In 1942, The Skin of Our Teeth broke from established theatrical conventions and walked off with the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Combining farce, burlesque, satire, and elements of the comic strip, Thornton Wilder depicts an Everyman family as it narrowly escapes one end-of-the-world disaster after another – from the Ice Age to flood to war.

  • REP STAGE: Ghost Writer (February 9 - 26, 2023)

    Ghost Writer

    Written by Dane Figueroa Edidi
    Directed by Danielle A. Drakes
    *WORLD PREMIERE

    FEBRUARY 9 - FEBRUARY 26, 2023

Family secrets spanning decades unravel as history and fiction collide. In 1920 just outside of Tulsa, Patrick, an Irish immigrant, seeks out the services of Ms. Ruby, a mysterious Black woman from Baltimore, known to help exorcise ghosts from her clients, but the price she is asking may be too high. Meanwhile, in 2019, Charles Ross hires infamous ghost writer Rebecca Warren to help him through his writer's block, but what she invokes could be his salvation or undoing. Edidi's new play examines the intersections of race and gender inviting us to explore the role of love, justice and joy in a world where the ghosts of the past have yet to be laid to rest.

“Ghost/Writer is filled with passages that stir an explosion of recognition instilled by a writer who can pack volumes of truth into a single line.”

  • (Rep Stage) Falsettos (April 27 - May 14, 2023)

    Falsettos

Music & Lyrics by William Finn
Book by William Finn & James Lapine
Directed & Choreographed by Joseph W. Ritsch
Musical Direction by Tiffany Underwood Holmes

    April 27-May 14, 2023

William Finn and James Lapine’s groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical FALSETTOS revolves around the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, lover, about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbians next door. It’s a hilarious, achingly poignant and utterly unique look at the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family… and a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories, and how we all learn to grow up and face the future with love and dignity.

“A Perfect Musical, an Imperfect Family…there’s hardly a moment in the exhilarating, devastating revival of “Falsettos” that doesn’t approach, or even achieve, perfection.”
