  “Technicolor Familiar: Illustrations by E. K. McDonnell” is an exhibition of recent drawings by local artist Emma Kramer McDonnell. The exhibition features a selection of McDonnell’s intimate, small-scale illustrations inspired by Surrealism, pop culture, and Western Esotericism. The Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the McCuan Hall.

  

  technicolor familiar encapsulates the current iteration of McDonnell's personal art practice. The name was adopted in 2018 to reflect the evolution taking place in her artwork; "technicolor" for highly saturated palettes, and "familiar" for creatures connected to magic and the occult. Anachronistic in style and symbolism, Technicolor Familiar exists somewhere between surrealism, pop art, medieval altarpieces, and Western esotericism. This new body of work draws inspiration from the (un)natural world, astrology, alchemy, dreams and the subconscious. 

  Emma K. McDonnell has been a practicing illustrator for nearly a decade, providing original artwork for theatre companies up and down the East Coast, including Pig Pen Theatre Co., Third Rail Projects LLC, and HCC's very own Arts Collective. As a fine art illustrator, Emma primarily works with traditional media, combining bold colors and delicate mark-making to generate small-scale, intimate illustrations. Emma received an AA in Studio Art from HCC and a BFA in Illustration from the Art Institute of Boston, and had been applying her formal visual art education to creative jobs in the performing arts ever since.

  Artist Statement 

  Shana R. Goetsch

  I come from whispered wishes
  a child of the corn, filled with red meats and casserole dishes.
  Ruddy cheeks in the winter
  sun burnt shoulders in the summer
  I am from rusty, dusty barns,
  and red front doors
  (because my mom wanted to be fancy like Elizabeth Arden,
  so I'll beg your pardon).
  Red carpets, red curtains, red blood
  you always knew how to make an entrance,
  and an exit.
  
  "All I see is red", a psychic once said.
  
  I made art about you,
  and it was Sanguine.
  Filled with want and silent screams,
  and warm pigments
  deep reds of cadmiums and crimsons.
  I scratched, ripped, scored, scarred, and carved the surface,
  still tattooing these lines with my hands, so I'll never forget the purpose.
  Touching hands, reaching out, touching me, touching you...
  I come from Diamonds and Princes
  smart mouths, and capable bitches
  squishy hugs and terrible kisses
  longings and losses, and optimisms and wishes.

  Features music faculty of the HCC Music Department in solo and ensemble works.  Program includes Der Hirt auf dem Felsen by Schubert, Slavonic Dances by Dvořák, Sonatine for Flute and Piano by Milhaud, and solo works for the guitar by Tárrega, Villa-Lobos.
