Students must meet payment deadlines for that portion of their bill for which they are responsible. The college's Tuition Payment Plan is designed to assist all students in meeting payment deadlines or bridging the period of time between the availability of certain funds (i.e., financial aid, including loans or tuition assistance) and payment deadlines.

These dates refer to credit classes. Payment for Continuing Education courses is due at the time of registration.

Collection Procedures

The college makes every effort to contact students with outstanding balances. However, if these attempts are unsuccessful, accounts are turned over to a collection agency and an additional charge of up to 25% of the outstanding balance is added to student accounts. Official transcripts and diplomas, and the ability to register for subsequent terms will also be withheld for students with outstanding balances until accounts are paid in full.

Once accounts are placed in collections, students have the option of paying HCC directly rather than the collection agency. Either way, students remain responsible for full payment of outstanding balances and collection costs. Holds on student accounts are removed immediately upon full payment by cash, credit card, or money order if the account is paid in person with HCC.  Accounts paid online will need to contact the cashier's office to have the hold removed.  Holds will not be released for ten business days for accounts paid in full by personal check.

*Debts referred for collection may affect your credit rating. See Collection FAQ's below for more possible impacts it could have.

If you need assistance or have questions, contact collections@howardcc.edu.

Collection FAQs

  • Do I have to pay the collection agency directly or can I pay HCC?

No, you do not have to pay the collection agency directly. Paying HCC directly will update your account quicker. As the payment is being made with us, we do not have to confirm and/or wait for reporting from the collection agency.

  • Is there a payment plan so that I can register and/or receive transcripts?
If you are in collections with MLR, please contact collections@howardcc.edu for more information. If you are in collections with CCU, no payment plan is offered. You must pay in full with credit/debit card, cash, and/or money order.
  • What is the collection fee and why do I have to pay it?

The collection fee is the cost of recovery on delinquent accounts that is charged to HCC by the outside collection agencies. It is an additional charge of up to 25% of the outstanding balance which is added to your student account.

  • Will the hold be removed right away once payment is completed?

Students who make payments directly to HCC using credit/debit card, cash, and/or money order will have their hold removed right away. Check payments are held for 10 business days to allow clearance of the payment. Once the check payment has cleared, the hold will be removed.

  • How can I contact the collection agency?

These are the current collection agencies that HCC uses. Please check your student account before providing information.

  • How long do collections accounts stay on your credit report?

Collections accounts will generally stay on your credit report for up to seven years from the date they first became delinquent. Even after a satisfaction and release has been generated, a satisfied judgment remains on a person's credit report for seven years. In other words, reporting agencies will not remove the history of the judgment once it's been paid. HCC does not have the ability to remove the collection from your credit report.
