Freshman Focus Program
Our nationally recognized Freshman Focus Program is designed for high school seniors planning to enroll at Howard Community College immediately following graduation. With the Freshman Focus Program, students are able to benefit from support in every aspect of the admissions and enrollment process. Students receive application assistance, attend a Focus Session to prepare for registration, and attend a one-on-one appointment for academic advising and registration.
Best of all: students are first in line for course selection and register before all other new students! Our Freshman Focus Program was recognized as an award winner by The National Academic Advising Association.
Applications for the Freshman Focus Program will be accepted until March 15th, 2021. Prospective students should complete the HCC general admissions application here.
Placement Testing and College Readiness
Howard Community College offers testing to determine students’ placement in English and Mathematics, which is the first step towards course selection and registration. However, by utilizing multiple measures to determine college readiness, HCC may determine some students are exempt from placement testing. A specific unweighted, cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) and course grades, as well as certain standardized test scores, may exempt a student from the English and/or mathematics tests.
At the time the HCC application is submitted, all students should submit official copies of the high school transcript, SAT scores, ACT scores, and PARCC scores (all that apply) for college readiness evaluation.
Students not meeting placement test exemption criteria should complete placement testing on their assigned placement test date. The placement test will assess academic skills in math, English, and reading. The results of the assessment, along with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine course selection. You cannot pass or fail the placement tests, but it is important that you do your very best to have an accurate measure of your academic skills. Furthermore, advisor recommendations for retesting should be strongly considered and completed in a timely manner.

Focus Session, Advising and Registration
The Focus Session brings you one step closer to academic planning and registering for courses. During this mandatory session, you will receive important information that will prepare you for your advising session, as well as support your success as a college student.
After attending the Focus Session, you will meet with an advisor. The goal of this appointment is to complete an academic plan and schedule of classes for the fall semester. It is important that you are prepared for this appointment by completing placement testing or receiving approval for placement test exemptions. If you are planning to start courses during the summer session, you may also register for summer courses during your advising appointment. After planning your courses, you will be eligible or register for your fall and/or summer courses.
