HESI Clinical Nursing Admission Assessment (A2):

Applicants to the clinical portion of the Accelerated RN, Traditional RN, LPN, Paramedic to RN and Military to RN programs must successfully complete the HESI Clinical Nursing Admission Assessment (A2) with a minimum overall composite score of  70%. This requirement is in addition to GPA and prerequisite course requirements.

(New for LPN Applicants for Fall 2019: All students will be required to take the Chemistry component of the exam.)

Applicants will be allotted a maximum of five hours to complete the exam. The exam will test applicants’ knowledge of English, math, biology, chemistry and anatomy and physiology. A study guide for the exam, HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review, 4th Edition, is available for purchase at the HCC Bookstore and is also available for on-campus use only at HCC’s Clark Library. For a list of suggested study topics, click here

To register for the exam, applicants should submit an in-person registration form, along with Cashier’s receipt for the non-refundable $65.00 exam fee, at the Office of Admissions and Advising (RCF-242) or register and pay online by using the link below.  A confirmation email will be sent within two business days to the applicant’s HCC email address confirming their exam date.  Any applicant wishing to reschedule or who miss their confirmed exam date will need to re-register and re-pay the $65.00 fee.

If an applicant is unable to sit for the exam at HCC, testing options are available at Prometric locations.  In order to request service at another site, students must contact jfletcher@howardcc.edu and provide the following information: full name, HCC student ID number, phone number, Evolve account information, and HCC email address.  Please Note: Requests may take up to a week or more to process.

In some instances, students may have already taken the HESI A2 at another institution and would like consideration based on those exam results. Please have an official Elsevier transcript sent for score consideration. Please note, the exam must have the exact same components (English, math, biology, chemistry and anatomy and physiology) and be within the two year limit of the application term.

If an applicant is unsuccessful in achieving  an overall composite score of 70% on the exam, they must wait a minimum period of three months before retaking the exam.  Applicants are allowed a maximum of three exam attempts within a given year.
