Allied Health Clinical Student Information

Required Paperwork

Students who are admitted to the clinical portion of an allied health program will receive a letter, along with paperwork that must be submitted to the Office of Admissions and Advising by the date stated in that letter.  Each program has a separate reply deadline by which students must submit their Acceptance of Seat form; for some programs a $300 deposit is also required.  Students who do not submit their forms and deposits by the deadline stated in their admission letters will forfeit their seats.

Students who are waitlisted will also receive a letter regarding their status and will also be required to submit paperwork in order to hold their place on the waiting list.  Students who do not submit this form by the deadline stated in their letter will forfeit their place on the waiting list.

Orientations

Orientation times and locations will be included in the acceptance letter to the program you have been admitted to. If you missed the first part of your orientation for your program, you must contact the Health Sciences Division clinical coordinators via email hsdcc@howardcc.edu or call 443-518-1561 to see if there is a make-up session.

Clinical Requirements

Students admitted to the clinical portions of HCC's allied health programs are required to complete the following items prior to beginning clinical coursework, by deadlines stated at each program's orientation.  Students should NOT complete any of these requirements until they receive specific instructions by attending the appropriate orientation or speaking with one of the Health Science Division clinical coordinators.

CPR

Only the American Heart Association's CPR for the Healthcare Provider satisfies this requirement.  This certification is offered at HCC through Continuing Education and through other community agencies.

Student Health Form

This form is available from the Health Sciences Division's listing of online resources.  It must be completed and signed by a physician.

Criminal Background Check & Drug Screening

The background check must be ordered and paid for online through Certified Background.  See below for more information about this requirement.  Students should not order a background check until instructed to do so by a college official.

Uniform

All clinical students are required to wear a specific uniform during clinical experiences.  The uniform varies by program.  Students should discuss uniform requirements with their program directors.

Registration

You may register online through MyHCC or in person (RCF-233) for the appropriate courses.

Students who do not complete these requirements by the stated deadlines will forfeit their seats in the clinical program.

A Drug Screening and Criminal Background Check will be required prior to enrollment in any nursing/allied health clinical course in order to ensure the safety of patients in the clinical setting.  Students who do not comply with the drug screening and criminal background check are ineligible for placement in clinical agencies and therefore are not able to progress in the clinical nursing/allied health program.  Students with a criminal background may be unable to progress in the clinical nursing/allied health program. It is the student’s responsibility to know whether they are eligible for licensure. If a student has a criminal background, it is the students’ responsibility to explore whether the background will prohibit them from being licensed and employed in the health care industry. HCC faculty and staff are NOT able to provide legal advice. If you have any questions about your existing criminal background, you may wish to discuss this with legal counsel.

*Please note, as of 6/17/2021 ALL students who accept a clinical seat will be required to show proof of completed COVID-19 Vaccine prior to beginning their clinical semester.

Criminal Background Check

All students enrolled in HCC's clinical allied health programs will be required to obtain a criminal background check through the authorized services of Certified Background. Clinical agencies have the right to deny access to any student whose criminal background check does not meet its acceptable minimum standard.  Students without a current criminal background check, or who have been deemed ineligible by the agencies affiliated with the course, may not be able to progress to completion in the selected program of study.

Students who do not maintain continuous enrollment in a clinical program for any reason must re-order the criminal background check if re-admitted to the clinical program.  The criminal background check is time-sensitive; students should not order background checks until instructed to do so by a college official.

Drug Screening

Students will be required to obtain drug screening as required for clinical placement.  Additional information regarding health certifications, criminal background checks and drug screening will be provided at the time of admission to clinical programs and/or at the program orientation, as directed.

CPR cards, Health Forms with required lab reports and a receipt from Certified Background, Inc. for the criminal background check within the specified dates for their clinical semester must be submitted to the Health Sciences Division Office (HSB-236) upon completion.  The complete Clinical Student Booklet is available online.
