College Policy Number/Title:
Howard Community College faculty focus on achieving instructional effectiveness by using evidence-based effective teaching practices designed to promote student success. An effective teacher sets high expectations; provides clear course goals and learning objectives; utilizes active learning strategies in and out of class; provides meaningful, frequent, and prompt feedback; guides students to be self-directed lifelong learners; plans activities and assignments that encourage student retention of content and skills; assists students with connecting new knowledge to prior knowledge and applying what they learn. Additionally, an effective teacher creates a learning environment that encourages student self-motivation, self-assessment, and self-directed learning; and designs or applies qualitative or quantitative assessments that provide documented evidence of student learning, and reflects on teaching for continuous improvement.
