Mehak

Mehak is determined to blaze a trail through medical school—and all the way to the jungle! She’s wanted to be a doctor since childhood, the sound of her grandmother’s comforting heartbeat causing her to fall in love with the human heart. Mehak graduated in spring 2016 and is well on her way to fulfill her dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon!
Mehak’s drive to become a doctor turned into action when she moved with her family from Pakistan three years ago. At the airport, the immigration officer told her, “Welcome to the land of opportunities.” For Mehak, his words have been proven true. While working on her associate degree, she became a certified nursing assistant and a patient care technician through HCC’s continuing education programs, which she hopes will lead to employment at Howard County General Hospital.
Leading up to graduation, Mehak received awards for academic excellence and contributions to student life from Student Support Services. She says she never would have earned her degree without the support of her mentors at HCC: “the teachers here have been so kind...they never failed to inspire me and make me look within to discover greatness.”
Mehak is starting at UMBC this fall, studying biochemistry and molecular biology with a minor in psychology. In the future, she dreams of finishing medical school and joining Doctors Without Borders. “After I finish school, don't look for me in the emergency room because I'll be in the jungles of Africa. That's the kind of life I want, I want to travel around the globe and help people.”
