Heather had a job in the human resources field for 15 years, but working as a teacher was something she always wanted to do. When she gave birth to her son, she saw first-hand how much she loved working with children and how she wanted to be a part of their growth and success in life. She looked at HCC’s Early Childhood Education and Child Care Program through the division of continuing education and workforce development and began taking courses for her newly chosen career path.
"It was a great experience for me. I really love HCC,” Heather said. “I was nervous about making a change in my career, but the instructor helped me with my transition and my decisions.”
Currently an assistant teacher with the Potomac Glen Day School, Heather works with four year olds and credits her curriculum development classwork for her success. “I got to be creative and it was fun to put it all together to apply to my classroom. The courses are a great resource for you to have. They help you figure out age-appropriate activities for the children.”
In the future, she may look towards a co-teaching or head teacher role, but is very happy with where she is today. “Since I am working full-time and am a mother, I like the flexibility of taking courses online. If you’ve been thinking about changing your career and haven’t been sure about how to get started, HCC will help you get set up for success.”
