With two nurses as parents, the choice to pursue a career in the medical field was an easy one for Gibson. At first, he wanted to go to medical school, but decided to pursue nursing first because he could start a career that would help him pay for his advanced education. “With nursing, there are a lot of opportunities. You can be bedside, you could be a technician, or you could be out in the field. And, working with people is absolutely amazing,” he explains.
After attending two different schools, he found his niche at HCC. “It’s just lovely here. Not too big, and not too small, the technology and library are very good, and the teachers are available if you need them.” His favorite class so far has been anatomy and physiology, where he has been able to see the circulatory system in action with a simulated model of the heart and dissect an animal heart. His passion for the subject matter has helped him achieve a GPA above 3.5 and entry into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
After graduation, Gibson plans to pursue his Bachelor’s of Nursing (BSN), hopefully while also working at a hospital that will help pay for his education. He is especially pleased at the value of his HCC education, “you pay less and you get a little bit more than what you expected.”
