Emily

For as long as Emily can remember, she has loved to cook and bake. Her dream of becoming a professional pastry chef, and eventually opening her own bakery, brought her to HCC when she was just 13-years-old. Emily enrolled in the Fun with Frosting and Teen Cuisine summer courses in HCC’s Kids on Campus Program.
“Kids on Campus gives you a taste of everything so your child can try different things without spending lots of money or time, explains Torry Brecht, Emily’s mother. “Chef Karson was a mentor. He encouraged Emily and she really liked him.”
After completing the two Kids on Campus classes, Emily moved on the following summer to take a three-credit Baking and Pastries Showpiece class, where she learned to make different types of cookies, pies, cakes, breads, and other desserts as well as how to run a kitchen. She also had to write her first college paper.
The experience inspired Emily to receive her ServSave Food Protection Manager certification at HCC last September. She also plans to get her baking certificate at HCC before graduating high school.
