A Balancing Act: Brittany Juggles Academics and Athletics to Achieve Success

Brittany Wartman is the personification of an accomplished student-athlete. During her two years at Howard Community College (HCC), she was focused, disciplined, flexible, with an outstanding work ethic and excellent time management skills.

“I was always taught to do my best,” she said. “My parents provided motivation for me, but not any pressure. My teammates also pushed me to do my best.”

Her hard work has been recognized - Brittany was one of only three student-athletes to win the 2018 Post-Graduate Scholarship by the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, and the only selection from a two-year institution. The scholarship recognizes student-athletes for superior work in class and on the field.

As a student, Brittany excelled and earned a 3.93 grade point average as a member of the prestigious Rouse Scholars program, through which she received a scholarship. In May, she was announced as HCC’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and graduated with an associate’s degree in social sciences. This fall, Brittany will attend Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she plans to play lacrosse and pursue a career in social work.

“I plan to obtain a master’s degree and to be a social worker who assists children, addicts, and prisoners,” she said.

As an athlete at HCC, Brittany was a triple threat. She played midfielder/defender and started both years in soccer and lacrosse. In her second year, she joined the basketball team, making her one of only a few HCC student-athletes ever to play three different sports in one academic year.

In soccer, she was selected to the Region XX First Team and o Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference’s (MD JUCO) Second Team. She was also chosen as an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

While playing lacrosse, Brittany was named to the All-MD JUCO First Team in 2018 and in 2017, she helped the women’s team win the Region XX championship and advance to the NJCAA national championship game. In basketball, she was starter and picked as the HCC defensive player of the year.

With a full schedule, Brittany still found time to work as a lifeguard for the college and volunteered at the Howard County Food Bank.

“Being on a sports team at HCC helped me with time management because I was able to manage my homework, my games, and practices successfully,” she said.
