Training & Development Solutions by Howard Community College: Rethinking Workforce Training in Howard County and Beyond
For more than 20 years, Howard Community College (HCC) has offered valuable, results-centered workforce training through its Charles I. Ecker Business Training Center. Eager to better convey the robust, comprehensive nature of its services available for the region’s business community, including entrepreneurs, business owners, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and professionals who aspire to grow, the college has announced a new name: Training & Development Solutions by Howard Community College. The new name was approved by HCC’s Board of Trustees in late 2020.
“When people previously heard our name, they envisioned only a facility and did not understand the breadth of services we offer and organizations we serve,” said Minah Woo, associate vice president of continuing education and workforce development at HCC. “With the new name of Training & Development Solutions by Howard Community College, we look forward to conveying the various solutions we offer, whether at our Gateway location, at our clients’ locations, or online. In light of COVID-19, clients want to utilize our virtual training more than ever before to ensure compliance with regulations, restrictions, and guidelines designed to keep everyone safe.”
Training & Development Solutions offers a wide array of occupational advancement resources virtually or in person – from leadership development and language and culture training to essential skills, information technology certifications and licensures, project management training, human resources training and more. Programs and services are offered by HCC’s Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, with a vision to offer personal, creative, and professional development opportunities that encourage education as a lifelong pursuit.
“The modern workforce required online and virtual learning options before COVID-19 was ever part of our lives, so an online infrastructure to support our clients’ needs has long been our practice,” said Woo. “That has been an important message as new and returning clients have approached us over the past several months, looking for learning and professional development opportunities that could be just as valuable and productive, despite the pandemic. Human resources leaders and company management seeking a training partner can find high-quality solutions here. We collaborate with them to understand their unique issues then bring our content experts together to create a customized solution for them.”
Training & Development Solutions’ office is located within Howard County’s new Maryland Innovation Center (MIC) at Columbia Gateway, approximately four miles from the HCC campus. The Innovation Center was created and is administered by the Howard County Economic Development Authority and is designed to be a nexus for innovation in Howard County – a place that aspiring or vested entrepreneurs, business owners, and managers can turn to for guidance, resources, and support as they are building and growing their businesses. The MIC also houses a business incubator, coworking space, and several technology anchor-companies and programs, alongside HCC’s Training & Development Solutions office.
“HCC is proud to serve as the education and training arm of the Maryland Innovation Center, with a new name that will resonate with local professionals who can start, grow, and flourish, with our support,” said Woo. “Training & Development Solutions is who we are and what we do. The enrichment opportunities we offer can change lives by helping people gain the skills they need to become effective and impactful leaders in our community.”
With the name change to Training & Development Solutions, Howard Community College has chosen to honor the legacy of Dr. Charles Ecker’s valued contributions by naming a facility on its main Columbia campus for him.
