Columbia, MD – Rep Stage, the regional theatre in residence at Howard Community College (HCC), opens its 24th season with Sharr White’s “The Other Place,” directed by Joseph W. Ritsch. The play tells the story of Juliana Smithton, a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a much older man, and her own health is in jeopardy. But in this brilliantly crafted work, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, past collides with present and the elusive truth about Juliana boils to the surface.
“[‘The Other Place’ is] so cleverly constructed that the nature and depth of the problem isn't revealed until the last shattering scene." – Variety
Sharr White’s The Other Place received its world premiere Off-Broadway at MCC Theatre, and subsequently received its Broadway premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club, with Joe Mantello directing and Laurie Metcalf in the starring role. Sharr White’s other plays include “Annapurna”, “Sunlight”, “Six Years”, and “Achilles in Sparta.”
“The Other Place” opens September 7, 2016, with a limited run through September 25 in the Studio Theatre of the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA) on the campus of HCC, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland.
