Robots, Basketball, and Flute? It's Summer at HCC!
It’s almost summer, and Howard Community College (HCC) is prepared with a variety of camps to keep children and teenagers engaged, whether it be learning to build a robot or acquiring some new tricks on the soccer field.
Kids on Campus
This year marks the 30th anniversary for HCC’s well-known Kids on Campus program, which provides enrichment education for youth ages 7 to 17.
A lot has changed in three decades, said Sara Baum, Director of Kids on Campus. What started with four programs – creative writing, typewriting, astronomy, and a computer course – and about 40 children, has grown to more than 250 programs, bringing in 1,600 children in 2015.
“The support of the parents through all these years has really been one of our reasons for growth,” Baum said. “It’s been very successful. I think the greatest change was when we started using vendors that offered such unique offerings.”
Offerings like Minecraft Animators, Jedi Training Camp, Make Your First 3-D Game, and American Girls: Hands-On History Fun are bound to keep the kids entertained and learning something while they’re at it.
“This is learning in the best sense of the word,” Baum said. “There are no tests, no homework. All the anxiety has been removed.”
Some of the most popular programs are those that help children and teens in school and in the real world. In Business Beginnings, kids learn the terminology for what it takes for a business to become viable. The kids then open up a little enterprise of their own.
Both boys and girls have a blast with the Fun with Frosting and Fun with Fondant programs. And to Baum’s delight, Intro to Debate is already full.
Summer classes include morning and afternoon programs with supervised lunch, before and after care, running June 20 to August 12.

HCC Sports School
For those looking to sharpen their child’s skills on the playing fields, HCC has a variety of athletic camps, offered by the HCC Sports School program.
The HCC Sports School is designed to meet the needs for elementary, middle and high school students. The program offers unique training concepts to develop fundamental skills, performance and knowledge of various sports. Campers are grouped by age and ability.
The 2016 summer camp activities include, Howard CC Dragons Boy’s Lacrosse Camp, Boys Basketball Summer Camp, and Girls Basketball Summer Camp. Campers receive a camp shirt and ball (if applicable), and a report card. The camps are instructed by current and former college or high school players and coaches.
Two additional soccer camps are offered on the HCC campus this summer, including the JB Soccer Academy Summer Camp and the Draganov School of Soccer Summer Camp.

The Music Institute at HCC Summer Enrichment Program
After a two-year hiatus, the Music Institute at HCC is once again offering its Summer Enrichment Program, geared towards middle and high school students.
The Institute offers a variety of music enrichment programs. New this year is the week-long Drumming Dragons camp that will take your percussionist to the next level and conclude with a grand finale concert in HCC’s Monteabaro Recital Hall.
Also new to the program is The Summer Flute Ensemble, where participants explore flute chamber music and experience the art of ensemble playing in a range of musical styles.
And through the Summer Orchestra: Movie Theme Music program, children have an opportunity to play some of the great movie and theatre works.
The above are just a few of many programs the Music Institute will offer this summer. For more information, visit http://bit.ly/1V4zYKw.
