New Plumbing Apprenticeship Program to Launch in Spring 2023

Apprenticeships Create a ‘Win-Win’ for Students Looking for Experience and Business Leaders Looking to Fill Employment Gaps

In partnership with the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) Greater Baltimore, Howard Community College (HCC) has announced the launch of a new plumbing apprenticeship program, slated to begin in the spring 2023 semester. The plumbing program was created in response to market demands for professionals who are trained to install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems in both residential and commercial environments.

An apprenticeship program combines on-the-job training (OJT) and related classroom instruction under the supervision of a journey-level craftperson or trade professional, in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly-skilled occupation. The plumbing apprenticeship encompasses a series of courses at HCC, and in tandem, full-time employment with local companies that are interested in filling current employment gaps while also creating solid strategies for staff recruitment and retainment, long-term. Through their field experience, which includes 8,000 hours of work time completed over a period of four years, apprentices will learn how to install, repair, replace, inspect, and test pipes and other fixtures that carry liquids and gases within homes, businesses, and factories. They will learn how to analyze blueprints and assure installations occur in accordance with state and local building codes. They will be educated on the types and amounts of material needed for various plumbing systems, as well as processes for troubleshooting and problem solving.

The college is expanding its apprenticeship program offerings to facilitate a true ‘win-win’ for students looking for entry-level experience, as well as business leaders who need to fill employment gaps. The plumbing apprenticeship will join existing trade apprenticeships at HCC in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) in partnership with the Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland (HACC MD) and in electrical with the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Chesapeake.

“We are incredibly excited about the launch of our new plumbing apprenticeship and the door it opens for the next generation of industry professionals to get the education and training they need for success,” said Richmond. “This program joins our existing trade apprenticeships to support workforce development needs across the State of Maryland.”

Admission requirements vary for each apprenticeship program offered at HCC. Those interested in the new plumbing apprenticeship program must be 18 years of age of older by the program start date, and must secure a Maryland State plumbing apprenticeship license through the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation. Additionally, applicants must submit a copy of their high school diploma or transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a current or previous employer. Those already employed in the plumbing industry, who are pursuing the apprenticeship to facilitate career advancement, should submit a sponsor letter from their current employer.
