New Noncredit Courses Meet Workforce Needs and Demands
Each semester, Howard Community College (HCC) offers hundreds of noncredit courses designed to help members of the community build and advance their skills, or pursue their personal hobbies and passions. Check out some of the new courses we have launched to help meet workforce needs and trends.
Language and Culture Programs
HCC has added a series of more intensive language development courses to accommodate and train students who want to learn Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Hebrew, Japanese, or Persian for professional reasons.
“We’ve created a new opportunity for people to access the classes we have been offering all along, with a more academic tone and approach,” said Rosie Verratti, senior director of languages and culture at HCC. “Language and cultural understanding are important to so many employers, as the marketplace becomes more global. Our new, intensive courses will help people build and advance foreign language skills to meet those needs.”
Orthopedic Technician Assistant Course
Orthopedic clinics treat patients with a wide range of injuries and ailments. Technicians are critical to clinic success, often supporting physicians and nurses with splinting, casting, and brace fittings for patients. HCC’s new eight-week orthopedic technician assistant course will help people get their start in the field.
“In addition to learning online and in the classroom, students who take this course will also have an opportunity to gain practical experience, shadowing doctors and technicians who are already working in the field,” said Jennifer Bukowitz, program director of nursing, allied health, and continuing education at HCC. “We are focusing on a very hands-on approach that will help people build crucial skills while also making connections with local orthopedic practices.”
Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® Certification Prep Course
The agile certified practitioner certification prep course is designed for professionals with project management experience, as well as a background in agile methodology, preparing them for Project Management Institute (PMI) – Agile Certified Practitioner (ACP)® exam. PMI-ACP® is one of the newest, most comprehensive, and in-demand certifications offered by the Project Management Institute.
“Job opportunities are growing rapidly in this field, and those who earn the PMI-ACP® certification will have the upper edge as they are applying for jobs and looking for opportunities to grow and be promoted,” said Beverly Johnson, director of business and technical training at HCC.
The course utilizes a hybrid format, giving students an opportunity to maximize their learning both in the classroom and online.
Master Watershed Steward Certification
HCC is offering a certification course for those interested in learning about storm water management, and how we can protect our communities by being good stewards and conservationists, in partnership with the University of Maryland Extension Howard County Watershed Stewards Academy. Throughout 16 meetings, the course integrates classroom discussions and conservation projects with weekend field trips to create a well-rounded experience and knowledge base.
“HCC offers many certifications in this area, and this course casts a wider net for people who want to contribute to and take better care of our community,” said Adrienne Summers, continuing professional education coordinator at HCC. “It’s a great opportunity for those who are retired, have a personal interest in conservation, or just want exposure to what is happening in our community that can be improved when people are willing to roll up their sleeves and get involved.”
